Dr Oz: Gluten Sensitivity Diet

Dr Oz had his entire audience take the Gluten Sensitivity Self Test. But what should you do if you think you have a Gluten Allergy? Dr Oz and Dr Michael Barnard talked about how you can change your diet to avoid or eliminate Gluten.

Dr Barnard said that even one of the symptoms mentioned on the self-check quiz could indicate a Gluten problem. The first step that’s likely to be recommended is trying a Gluten free diet to see if that corrects your symptoms. But how can you do that?

Dr Oz shared his Gluten Free Diet shopping list and explained why he thinks most people should avoid products marketed as Gluten Free.

You have to avoid Wheat, Rye, and Barley to eliminate Gluten from your diet. That may sound simple, but as patients soon find out, there are thousands of products that contain these ingredients as additives.

Any natural foods that contain a single ingredient (think Broccoli, Lentils, or Salmon) should not have Gluten in it, which can be helpful to get a basic understanding of what you can eat. “You’ll lose weight on a Gluten Free diet if you do it the right way,” Dr Oz said.

Dr Oz: Gluten Free Foods Are Bad For You?

Gluten Free products are blowing up in the marketplace, raking in over $6 billion last year. Dr Barnard said these foods are convenient, but often have added sugar or calories.

Dr Oz had some interesting recommendations. He said that people who are Gluten Friendly should absolutely avoid G-free products. He’s not even sure they are the best idea for people with Gluten Sensitivity.

“There are better ways of getting many of those dietary needs that you have into your daily regimen,” Dr Oz said.

What Type of Doctor Treats Gluten Sensitivity?

Dr Barnard said the first medical contact you should make is with your general practitioner. It’s likely that you would then be referred to a gastroenterologist for testing and treatment. Dr Oz recommended asking your doctors specific questions and use specific phrases to find out whether your doctor is knowledgeable in this area.
