Dr. David Perlumutter, author of Grain Brain, says our diets have changed over the years, with a literal explosion in the number of carbohydrates that we consume on a daily basis. He told Dr. Oz they have a huge impact on the health our body, calling them “poison” to the brain, which is why he believes they cause Alzheimer’s. Dr. Perlmutter says we have demonized fats over the years, but he argues fat is actually your friend and can actually help to prevent Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dr David Perlmutter says you can prevent Alzheimer’s by eating fewer vegetables like sweet potatoes because they are high in sugar.

Dr. Oz explained that a brain with Alzheimer’s has areas which have disappeared or shriveled up and stopped functioning properly. Dr. Perlmutter added that there is literally no medication to prevent this type of deterioration, but he believes the food choices you make can have a drastic impact on your brain health. Dr. Oz demonstrated how, according to Dr. Perlmutter, eating carbs literally begins to shrink your brain and lead to memory loss.

Dr. David Perlmutter argues that all carbohydrates are bad for your brain, including whole grains and fruits, all of which Dr. Oz recommends as part of a healthy diet. Dr. Perlmutter says whole grains raise your blood sugar just as much as candy bars and donuts, they just do not make your belly as fat, so we often ignore their impact on the brain. He went on to explain that certain fruits and vegetables, especially those grown under the ground, should be avoided due to a high sugar content.

Dr Oz: Brain-Healthy Carbohyrdates

Dr. David Perlmutter says there are carbohydrate options that are better for your brain and can even help with other health issues like depression and insomnia.

  • All vegetables grown above the ground

Dr Oz: Alzheimer’s Healthy Fat Diet

Dr. Perlmutter says that while you need to avoid certain types of carbs in order to keep your brain strong and prevent Alzheimer’s, he is giving you back the fats that you have been avoided for so long.

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Butter
  • Coconut Oil
  • Avocado
  • Cheese
  • Shrimp
  • Salmon

Dr. Perlmutter says we have been depriving our bodies of these healthy fats for too long and he even quells Dr. Oz’s concern of whether butter is actually a heart-healthy fat, telling him it absolutely is a good option for those concerned about their heart health. He even added that the brain has a wonderful way of healing itself, so even if you have already caused damage it can be reversed by making some changes to your diet.

Dr Oz: Low-Carb Alzheimer’s Recommendation

Dr. Oz says Dr. David Perlmutter’s approach is one that is completely opposite to what he was taught in medical school, but more and more he realizes Dr. Perlmutter is correct because people who die from heart disease or suffer a stroke are doing so due to inflammation in the body. That inflammation is more often caused by eating too many carbohydrates than from eating too much fat. Dr. Oz recommends reducing your intake of carbs if you want to protect your brain from Alzheimer’s and dementia.
