Elisabeth Hasselbeck hung out with Dr Oz to talk about the estimated 2 million Americans with undiagnosed food allergies. They also shared a Food Sensitivity Symptom Test you can take to assess your own risks. But if you think you have a food allergy, what can you do about it?

If you think you have hidden food allergies, Dr Oz & Elisabeth Hasselbeck shared a plan to eliminate common ingredients and find answers.

Elimination trials are sometimes the fastest way to get answers about your health, Elisabeth said. But you can’t cut everything out all at once, which she admitted is a mistake she made. If you do that, you won’t be able to pinpoint what was aggravating you.

Dr Oz Corn Food Allergy: Elimination Trial

To get results, you’ll need to eliminate a group of foods for about one week and see how it goes. For example, start with corn and remove products with corn ingredients, which can include candy or condiments. Check the labels!

If you’re still having symptoms, reintroduce corn in your diet and move to the next category. Read below for a list of Hidden Food Allergy symptoms.

Dr Oz Whole Wheat Allergy: Elimination Trial

Remove wheat and whole wheat ingredients, including breads, crackers and pasta. Use oats, quinoa, buckwheat, yams and other ingredients. If symptoms go away, “you’re on the right track,” she said. But you still might have to keep pressing, because Wheat Allergies and Gluten Allergies are separate diagnoses.

Being able to find options to fill in for ingredients you’re eliminating is a key to success if you’re trying this at home. Elisabeth said there are Internet resources to help you learn what you can eat without ingesting an ingredient you’re eliminating.

Dr Oz Dairy & Peanut Food Allergy: Eliminate Trial

If corn and wheat aren’t your culprits, you should do trials to eliminate dairy or peanuts. If you’re still not getting results, it’s time to bring a medical specialist into the conversation to help you get to the bottom of this.

Elisabeth said you should also make sure your primary care doctor is in the loop on your diet research. Make them part of the process so they know what’s going on with your health.
