Dr Oz: Montel Williams Interview

You’ve seen ex talk show host, Montel Williams, on The Dr Oz Show talking about his struggle with multiple sclerosis. Today, Montel joined Doctor Oz to talk about his latest struggle—emotional eating. He’s kept this secret for years, but today, for the first time, Montel was ready to open up about that and a personal struggle he had when he was 19-years-old. He revealed how he conquered his biggest health crisis. Could his method work for you?

Dr Oz: Montel Williams Emotional Eating

Dr Oz spoke with Montel Williams about his struggle with Emotional Eating.

Montel: Emotional Eating

In his darkest moment, Montel says he reached for the one thing that could ease his pain—food. Dr Oz said he was doing this show because he learned a deep secret in Montel’s life that he had never told anyone, but though it would be healing to his audience.

Eight months ago, Montel saw one of Dr Oz’s shows regarding emotional eating. He told Doctor Oz that he had been doing that since the age of 19. In fact, every time he got anxious, sad or nervous, he turned to food. He had penned 3 books regarding fitness, but people had no idea how much he really cheated. His deep secret was all about body image.

Montel Williams Depression

For Dr Oz, there were many layers in this story for him. Many people struggled with body image. In the past, Dr Oz commended Montel on his openness with his struggle with depression, to which Montel revealed that he had been diagnosed with clinical depression. He could cry at the drop of a time for no reason and had no way of controlling it. When he felt that way, he snuck food. He could eat a whole sleeve of any cookie in 8-minutes flat. He would eat the entire package so no one would know he snuck food.

Montel did a Dr Oz Show in January, where Dr Oz asked him to pull up his shirt. (I remember that show!) Hesitantly, he did, but what you didn’t know was that he was so nervous the evening before the show, he ate an entire box of Girl Scout Cookies.

Montel Williams Body Image Struggle

Montel says Hollywood is a façade. (Duh!) Here he was, a 56-year-old man and trying to compete with the 22-year-olds. He told Dr Oz it was hard for him. He was telling people what to do to get healthy, but he wasn’t taking his own advice. For him, it was deeper than emotional eating, it was about body image too.

Montel Williams Breast Cancer vs Gynecomastia

In 1974, when he was 19 and in the Marine Corps, he used to box. He was a scrawny guy so he turned to weight lifting. He trained so hard he got a tear in his right pectoral muscle. It swelled up 2-inches. He went to the doctor and 8 hrs later, he found himself in surgery with a double mastectomy. His doctor thought he had male breast cancer and “butchered him” but it was actually gynecomastia. At the young age of 19, he had to walk around with the mastectomy scars. (He tears up as he recalled the memory.) This was one of the reasons he suffered from bad body image. Whenever he didn’t believe he was in perfect shape, his mind went back to being 19, with the scars.

He told Doctor Oz he was there today to show people that he’s trying to do something about this and looking for ways to work around it. He told Dr Oz that he has helped him by giving him the tools to allow him deal with this. Montel said he was “getting busy living and not hanging out waiting to die.” He believed you can either do nothing about it or you can seek out answers. He chose the latter. He urged viewers to stop the “I wish I was you’s” and to get off the couch and just do it.

Dr Oz said that there was a connection of how you feel about your body and emotional eating and many people suffer from this.
