Dr Oz: Ayurvedic Massages

Ancient Ayurvedic secrets can help you with digestion, but did you know that Ayurvedic Massages can help get you skinny and relieve tension too? On today’s show, Dr Oz was joined by Spa Owner of Raj Spa, Candace Badgett, to show you how to do these ancient methods at home. (Dr Oz even tried out one method!) The Ancient Ayurvedic massages profiled on the show are the Udvartana Paste Massage, the Svedanam Massage and the Shirodhara Massage. Previously, Dr Oz has looked at Ayurvedic recipes.

Candace Badgett owner, Raj Spa, says these body treatments are refreshing and effective. Since offering these treatments at her spa, she’s been astounded by the results. One man went through a 5-day program and in 2 months, he lost 40 lbs. The best part is that not only will these methods help you lose weight, they are relaxing too. (Does this mean I don’t have to go to the gym today?)

The Udvartana Paste Massage requires that you give yourself a Udvartana paste facial

Dr Oz: Udvartana Paste Massage

A Udvartana Paste Massage? You can’t get more relaxing than this. The Udvartana paste is used to massage the body with oil that has been “herbalized.” The friction of the massage creates heat to help reduce the appearance of cellulite (an added bonus.) To make the Udvartana paste at home combine:

Chick Pea Flour
Herbal oil
Kapha oil (spring)
Pitta oil (summer- fall)
Vata oil (Winter)

*It should be the consistency of peanut butter. Slather onto face and leave on for a few minutes. Rinse off.

Dr Oz: Svedanam Massage Steam Bath

The Svedanam massage helps to remove toxins in the body and get your hormones in balance. It is a full body oil massage. Do this at home with a sauna or a steam bath and then place a cold towel on your head. (Do the oil massage first.)

Dr Oz: Shirodhara Massage

Dr Oz volunteered for the Shirodhara massage. (I guess someone had to do it!) Dr Oz lied on a table. A stream of oil was poured rhythmically back and forth across his forehead. Candace says this massage pulls out stress and tension, which can cause you to gain weight. The pouring of oil helps releases “happy hormones.” To do at home, turn shower on (not too hard) and let it pour over your head.
