Dr Oz: Sleep Apnea vs Snoring

Dr Oz did a segment on the difference between Sleep Apnea and Snoring, which is something that could save you or your partner’s life!  Doctor Oz also showed the latest Sleep Apnea At-Home Test called the Ares Sleep Apnea Test.  A lady named Mabel joined Dr Oz because she said that she gets woken up all night long by her husband’s snoring.  She is so tired everyday from a lack of sleep due to the snoring, and she often goes to sleep on the couch.  She has tried everything, even shaking him and waking him up, but nothing ever seems to help.

Dr Oz: What is Sleep Apnea?

Dr Oz said that when Mabel’s husband, Mike, goes to sleep, his tongue hits against the back of his throat and vibrates, which causes the snoring sound as Dr Oz Sleep Apneahe tries to suck air in through his mouth and nose.  The bigger problem happens when your tongue gets stuck in the back of the throat though.  When you have Sleep Apnea, your tongue actually blocks off your airway and eventually you get to the point where you cannot move air anymore and you basically begin to suffocate.  Mabel said that when Mike is not snoring, she shakes him to make sure that he is alive, so it sounds like he quite possibly could have Sleep Apnea.

Dr Oz: Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Doctor Oz asked Mabel which of the following three is the most important Sleep Apnea Symptom to look for:

1.  Snoring loud enough to wake you up?

2.  Breathing disrupted during sleep?

3.  Excessively tired during the day?

The answer is that the most important Sleep Apnea Symptom to look for is #2 – breathing disrupted during sleep.  When your tongue collapses, your breathing stops and you often wake-up, so it is one of the earliest signs that we can use to diagnose ourselves.

Dr Oz: Ares At-Home Sleep Apnea Test

Dr Oz said that the Ares Sleep Apnea Test is a new device that costs around $200 and you can use it at home to figure out if you really have Sleep Apnea or not.  The best thing about the Ares Test is that you do not have to go to a Sleep Clinic and you can do it in the comfort of your own home.  Sleep Apnea causes Cardiovascular problems, makes you more likely to have a stroke, and increases your risk of High Blood Pressure by 3-fold.  So if you suspect that you have Sleep Apnea, you should seriously consider getting tested.  Doctor Oz also said that obesity is the number one reason that you have Sleep Apnea, so dealing with Sleep Apnea and losing weight tend to go hand-in-hand.
