Dr Oz: Brown Rice Syrup Contains Arsenic?
Dr Oz has spoke about Arsenic in Apple Juice and Arsenic in Tap Water… but is there also arsenic in Brown Rice Syrup? You buy organic for your family, thinking it’s healthier, but is it really safe? On today’s show, Dr Oz was joined by Dr. Urvashi Rangan, PhD, to give you information on a recent report that found elevated levels of arsenic in brown rice syrup-a common product used in organic foods.
Dr Oz: Is Organic Brown Rice Syrup Better?
Organic foods cost 50% more, so shouldn’t that mean it’s healthier for you?
Dr Oz says that there were 20% recalls from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) that included salmonella in peanut butter and e-coli in beef products.
According to Dr. Urvashi Rangan, PhD, brown rice syrup is used in a number of different products, like cereal bars, protein bars and infant cereal. There are varying levels of arsenic in these, as well as, other products. Dr. Rangan was careful to mention that arsenic isn’t getting into organic foods any more than in regular foods. (That isn’t really reassuring!)
Dr Oz: Arsenic In Food
Foods with the Most Concern:
-grapes (wine, grape juice)
If there is arsenic in the soil, these types of foods take it up through the soil the most.
Dr. Rangan, told Doctor Oz that the issue was lack of standards in place for this type of arsenic. Dr. Rangan stated that organic foods still offer a lot more benefits over traditional foods. Studies show that kids who eat an organic diet tend to have lower amounts of pesticides in their bodies. At this point, we should be thinking about how we treat the food and what type of soil we plant the food in.
Dr Oz: Brown Rice Syrup Dangers
-check your pantry for foods with this ingredient
-try moderating those foods until the government sets standards
-brown rice syrup comes from all over the world, so we need a national and international standard
Dr Oz says that you can still buy organic products and feel good, especially the fresh foods because they have great value over traditional foods.
