Dr Oz: Best Time for Doctors Appointments, Dentist Appointments, Flu Shot & Mammogram

By on September 20, 2010

Doctor Oz did a segment on the Best Time of Day To Do Anything!  When is the best time to cheat on your diet?  When is the best time to schedule surgery?  When is the best time to avoid dying?  When is the best time to avoid heart attacks?  Dr Oz answered all of these important questions!  There is an actual science behind how all of these work, and they can dramatically improve your health.  Internal clocks or Chronobiology is crucial to understanding our bodies.  Did you ever wonder why more babies are born in the middle of the night?  Or why there are more car accidents at 2 pm?  Well, in the middle of the night, you are most relaxed, which makes it a great time to give birth.  From your pain threshold to the viscosity of your blood to your body temperature to your lung capacity, all of these differ throughout the day. The Best Time of the Day for a Flu Shot

Dr Oz answered a great question: “When Is the Best Time for Medical Appointments?”  Here is Dr Oz’s guide to timing your doctor’s visits the best:

Best Time for Doctor’s Appointments

Dr Oz said the best time for doctor’s appointments is at 8 AM, because doctors in the morning start on time and are not stressed from being behind schedule, but as they fall of the schedule later on, they get more stressed and may not give you the best attention.

Best Time for Dentist’s Appointments

Dr Oz said that the best time for doctor’s appointments is at 2 pm.  A group of European researchers said that local anesthesia lasts longer in the afternoon… so if you are going to the dentist for a minor procedure like a root canal, think about doing it in the afternoon.

Best Time for Mammogram

Dr Oz said that the best time for a mammogram is at 9 am, before you have had coffee or any other caffeine, because breast sensitivity changes when you have coffee or caffeine.

Best Time for Surgery

Dr Oz said that the best time for a surgery, like a hernia repair for example, is at 10 am.  Surgeons perform better at 10 am, after they have warmed up a bit.  Dr Oz also said that post op nausea is more common in the late afternoon.

Best Time for Flu Shot

Dr Oz said the best time for a flu shot is at 11 AM, because it is more painful between noon and 3 pm (that is when you want to avoid needles!).
