Dr Oz: Cell Phone Radiation & Diet Soda Dangers
Doctor Oz’s show called The Truth Behind The Headlines included a segment on the link between Hysterectomies and Heart Disease as well as the dangers of the radiation in Japan (click here to read a summary of this segment: Dr Oz: Hysterectomy & Heart Disease, Japan Nuclear Radiation Danger ). In the second segment, Dr Oz discussed the danger of Cell Phone Radiation causing Cancer and of Diet Soda causing Strokes. Here is the latest news on these topics:
Dr Oz: Diet Soda & Strokes
Ted Daniel reported from Harvard University where a professor of neurology was at a Stroke Conference. The latest research shows that there is a strong connection between diet soda and having a stroke. In fact, Diet Soda Drinkers are 50% more likely to have a Stroke than Non-Diet Soda Drinkers. Researchers are still trying to figure out where there is such a link. Is it a chemical in the Diet Soda, or is it the lifestyle of the Diet Soda Drinkers?
Dr Oz said that after he read the study, his biggest takeaway was actually that our salt regulations are not strict enough. He said that whenever you read a story, you should really pay the most attention to the last paragraph, and this study argues that our salt recommendations by the USDA Dietary Guidelines are too high. The USDA Dietary Guidelines say that you can have up to 2300 mg of salt per day, but the American Heart Association Guidelines say that you should have up to 1500 mg of salt per day if you have no other risk factors. For your reference, 1 tsp of salt is 2300 mg alone. But we get most of our salt from eating processed foods.
Doctor Oz did a demonstration to show what salt does to our bodies. The inside lining of our arteries are very delicate, and if you have too much salt, it will start scarring and breaking through your artery’s walls. These little tears have to be repaired by your body, so cholesterol forms plaque to heal over it. And this plaque leads to Strokes.
The bottom line is that we should quit drinking soda of all kinds – Diet Soda and regular soda. For more tips on how to quit drinking soda, read this: Dr Oz Soda Challenge.
Dr Oz: Cell Phones Cause Cancer
Jan Jeffcoat, from FOX Chicago, reported from the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) where they are questioning the safety of cell phones. They have shown that talking on the cell phone for less than an hour can increase your brain activity in the area closest to the antennae. This implies that the brain is sensitive to the electromagnetic radiation emitted by cell phones. How does this impact our health? Should we stop using our cell phones?
Dr Oz said that now we have evidence that our brain changes from cell phone use, but does that mean that cell phones cause Cancer? Dr Audrey Halpern said that it is too early to say, but this study is the first time anyone has been able to show a direct effect on the brain from cell phone use. The study was done by giving half of a group of people phones that were on, but on mute – so it cannot be that the brain activity was caused by being in a conversation.
Doctor Oz showed a picture of the increase in metabolism in your brain which shows chemical messages being sent, but we do not yet know the long term implications of this brain activity. Dr Oz said that in the meantime, since we do not yet know for sure whether Cell Phones cause Cancer or not, here are some Cell Phone Rules to live by:
Dr Oz: Cell Phone Rules
1. Switch ears when talking on a cell phone.
2. Never use the phone when you have a weak signal, because the phone has to boost its power to improve the signal.
3. Keep your phone 5′ away from your bed at night.
4. For people under the age of 20, limit your cell phone usage because your brain is still developing.
5. Use an earpiece or headset device if you are on the phone a lot.
