Dr Oz: Cluster Headache, Migraine Headache & Tension Headache Cures

By on September 27, 2010

Doctor Oz did a segment on the three most common headaches and headache solutions to give you relief right now.  Not all headaches are the same, hence Dr Oz’s headache detective or CSI of Headaches theme.  The three most common headaches are: Cluster Headaches, Migraine Headaches  and Tension Headaches.  Do you know the difference between these three types of headaches?

Dr Oz’s Headache Cures

1.  Migraine Headache Cure

Dr Oz said that with Migraine Headaches, you usually feel pain just on one side of your head.  36 million Americans Dr Oz: Capsaicin Nasal Spray get migraines and 80% have a family history of them.  Dr Oz said that a migraine can even hurt the entire side of your face, but that it is usually just a single side of your face.  Other signs of migraine headaches include light sensitivity and nausea.  A migraine occurs when a blood vessel spasms closed and opens, which can cause a lot of pain.  Dr Oz said that caffeine can often be beneficial when you have a migraine.  There is a hypothesis out there that there is in fact a migraine gene that started originally so that a few members in a society would be hypersensitive and be able to alert and protect the entire community from danger.  Dr Oz said that you could take Triptan, a prescription migraine medication, but you must make sure to time it properly.  Some natural home remedies for migraine headaches include 125 mg of Feverfew every day and magnesium supplements as well.

2.  Tension Headache Cure

Dr Oz said that tension headaches occur across your entire forehead and are the most common headache to get.  80% of women get tension headaches.  Some symptoms of Tension Headaches include: pain that is strongest over your eyebrows, pain in your neck and pain across your whole head (not just on one side of your head).  Emotional and physical stress can trigger these headaches.  Dr Oz said that Naproxen and Ibuprofen are better Tension Headache Cures than Acetaminophen (unless the other two upset your stomach).  Dr Oz also said that liquid gel caps work faster than regular pills.  One home remedy for tension headaches it to place one finger towards the inside to middle of each eyebrow and apply pressure, because this is a tension point and can relieve your headache.

3.  Cluster Headache Cure

Dr Oz said that Cluster Headaches occur behind your eye and is the most severe in terms of pain.  A Cluster Headache can feel like a searing poker going through your eye.  Cluster Headaches are cyclical so you can get 1-3 episodes every day, or the time between each episode can be greater.  Each episode of a Cluster Headache can last hours.  Other symptoms include nasal symptoms, eye tearing and eye redness.  Dr Oz said that the cause of Cluster Headaches comes from a nerve that goes from behind your ear into your face, and that the change in season can trigger them.  Dr Oz said that oxygen (which you really can only get at a hospital) can help relieve these headaches.  Another interesting Cluster Headache Cure is Capsaicin Nasal Spray (and for those of you who don’t recall, capsaicin is derived from hot peppers – so I wonder if Capsaicin Nasal Spray will make your eyes burn and water just like hot peppers do).

Comments to Dr Oz: Cluster Headache, Migraine Headache & Tension Headache Cures

  1. I am a Chiropractor in Reno, NV and I agree with his recommendation for supplements. I have been recommending Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), magnesium, and fever few to my patients that suffer from migraines for years and they tend to get pretty good relief if they follow the daily supplementation recommendations. Good article, thanks.
