Dr Oz: Cost of Bad Habits: Carmen Wong Ulrich: Smoking & Overeating

Doctor Oz did a show on the Cost of Bad Habits like Smoking, Overeating and Caffeine Addiction with Carmen Wong Ulrich from CNBC.  Do you know the financial cost of your bad habits?  If health complications are not bad enough, there are also serious financial consequences for all of our bad habits.Cost of Bad Habits

The Cost of Overeating

Dr Oz said the Cost of Overeating is $258,000 over your lifetime.  Carmen Wong Ulrich said that the health care cost for people who overeat is 42% higher.  There is also wage discrimination for people who are overweight.  You make $1.25 less per hour if you are overweight and overweight women in the workplace make 24% less.  Dr Oz gave his brave volunteer a Pedometer to help her count how many steps she takes each day, because making sure you walk 10,000 steps a day is a great way to lose weight.

The Cost of Caffeine Addiction

Dr Oz said that the Cost of Caffeine Addiction is $113,000 over your lifetime.  Did you know that one out of every four things we drink is a soda?  Caffeine can also cause hypertension and gatro-intestinal problems.  Instead, try to have some Green Tea, which has 1/4 the caffeine of coffee and will help you to quit your Caffeine Addiction.

The Cost of Smoking

Dr Oz said that the Cost of Smoking Addiction is $245,000 if you do not get cancer or have any other health complications – this is just the cost for cigarettes over your lifetime.  Smoking also decreases your life by 9 years.  With cigarettes costing between $4 and $6 per pack – and $10 in New York City, smoking is an expensive habit.  Plus, getting the smell out of your clothes and car is hard.  Smoking even brings down the resale value of your home and car.  If you are a smoker, you reduce the resale price of your car by at least $1000 and Carmen Wong Ulrich bought a home from a smoker and brought the cost of the home down by 20% because it would cost so much to get the smoker smell out. Dr Oz gave his guest a pack of Nicotine Patches, because 1 out of 20 people (or 5%) successfully quit smoking without help, but if you use Nicotine Patches, you increase your chances of being able to quit smoking to a 1 in 2 success rate.
