Dr. Oz: Cure & Treatments for Herpes Simplex 1 (HSV-1)

By on February 26, 2010

Dr. Oz said that 9 out of 10 of us are already infected with Herpes Simplex 1 (HSV-1), which is easily transmitted through kissing.  Herpes Simplex Virus is when you get little cold sores on the outside of your mouth or the tip of your nose.  Herpes should not be confused with Cancer Sores, which are caused by trauma to your mouth.

Rita, Dr. Oz’s assistant of the day from Long Island, did a demonstration where she squeezed a pomegranate seed to show what it is like when a herpes blister pops and the virus spreads all over and gets inside of your mouth.  Only 1/3 of people have symptoms when they have Herpes Simplex 1.  Do you know how to tell the difference between canker sores and herpes blisters?  Canker sores are found on the inside of your cheek, under your tongue, the tip of your tongue, or the roof of your month (even on your gums you can get a canker sore).  However, if you see a cold sore blister on the outside of your lips, on your skin or on the tip of your nose, this is likely herpes.  The most dangerous is if you have herpes simplex virus on the tip of your nose, because then it is possible for you to get it into your eye which causes lots of problems.

Dr. Oz’s Home Remedies, Cures & Treatments for Herpes Simplex Virus 1:

1.  Tea Bag

Steep a tea bag and put it into the refrigerator.  Then apply the tea bag with local pressure over the area with the herpes to ease the pain.  The tannins in the tea also help to dry out the herpes blister.

2.  Yogurt

Live Culture Yogurt contains lysine, which has been scientifically proven to retard and slow down Herpes Simplex Virus 1.  Yogurt is such a fabulous super-food… I hope everyone out there is eating it daily!

Hi Dr Oz my son used to get Horendus coles sores and we have tried every over the conter product going . When he was younger he would accidently smear the creams we used and the sores would spred over his lip. But an elderly lady I met in a chemist told me not to waste my money and the solution to treat colesores and not have them grow or spread or turn to a scab is to put ice on it for about two hours as soon as he feels it or sees it start and this has truned our lives around! The coles will often not get bigger than a pinhead and will not spread. Just thought this might help others. Kind regards Maria Gilmore Australia

Hello my son has been having a problem with cold sores and he usually only gets an outbreak once a year at the same time of the year but I dont know what to do I keep telling him that he has to keep his hands clean so that he won’t spread it in his eyes or to other people. And I read that you said to use yogurt, but do I just spread the yogurt on his lip or what? And what can we do to prevent this from reocurring.

Hi Kim, I am sorry for you pain :-( and I understand it. My son suffered so baddly at times he ended up in hospital. Please the minute you feel a cold sore get an ice cube (NOT icepack) it must be ice a cube is best. Put it directly on the cold sore it will not get any bigger. If you get the ice on when it is the size of a pin head it will grow no bigger. The ice kills the virus. for some reason after doing this for many times when they came back. I now havent had one for about 4 years. Wrap the ice cube in a cloth but put the ice directly on untill you can not stand it any more :-) do it about 4 times a day. Do not let the melted ice run over your face area. It is really amazing and it will help you very very much. Please let me know how you go. Good luck sweety.

  7. Karen G. says:

I suffered from frequent cold sores until using a solution a reader wrote about in our local Dr. Gott Medical advice column. What works for me is when the first skin tingle is felt I will quickly run the tip of a wood match under water and rub it on the tingle spot. The cold sore / fever blister NEVER appears. Such a simple solution to end the suffering and all that goes with it.
Hope this will work for others.

  8. Michelle says:

I was using plein natural yaghurt directly on my family s pimples faces specially over the soars and let it dry till morning…and even inside the eyes. It is miracolous how fast in a matter of just half an hour or so the soar clears out! Just try it, you will see what I mean. Yagurt has a very strong anti viral cleaning element that kills the soar and the virus on the spot! Keep trying every day on your face before you go to bed. You can also try it few times a day. Put the yagurt once then let it dry then clean the area and try it again and let it dry again. I do not know any thing more effective then plein natural yagurth! But you have to leave it on your soars and cover them completely. It is preferred if the yagurt is not too liquid.

  9. I’ve been getting cold sores for as long as I can remember an nothing has ever worked. I looked on this website last night an im trying the ice cube trick an I must say so far it has worked far better then anything else, its just really cold. But it hasn’t grown an im hoping in a few days, instead of a couple weeks that it’ll be gone. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the advice Maria

  10. Hi Amber, Do the Ice a couple of times in the first 24hours if you get a chance. Dont ever use an ice pack as it wont work and will make it worse. An Ice cube is awsome wish a flannel to hold it to you cole sore.Flannel will absorb any drippy water ;-) Yes cold but IT WORKS ;-) Good luck let me know how it goes. And I do not know if it is mind over matter but now my son and I only get them every blue moon. Where as it was every other month for me. so good luck. I know it will work. After a period of time they will come less often,

  11. Hi Maria. Thanks again. Its been a couple days its working, usually by now it a gross red yucky looking thing where u just wanna go hide in a hole till its gone. But it’s not that bad at all. I don’t mind it to much. Thanks again for the advice, I love u, u saved my lip.

  12. Maria Gilmore says:

LOL LOL Great Amber, I am happy for you as they are painful and ugly ;-). I used to get them on the same spot all the time when I was stressed and I think this spot was vunerable. But thouch wood, I havent had one for a long long time probs about 3 years . My son is only 18 and his are becoming allot more random now also. It must have something to do with the ice. So I promise you if you use the ice asap. and on it at least twice till the whole ice cube is used your life will be allot better. Hope you have the same success that we have had. Take care sweet :-) X

  13. My cold sore only lasted a week, totally awesome. They usually would stick around for 2-3 weeks. I woke up today an it was totally gone. I love the ice cube trick, thanks Maria. Hope it works for others

  14. This is the best natural treatment you will find. You know how you get the pain and stinging before an outbreak? I had that and applied this 3x in the first hour and never had an outbreak. I had my husband try it to just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. It worked for him too.

  15. The Anti-Virus is what we used.

  16. Hi Wendy. What is the name of this treatment you used please?

  17. I’ve been a longtime sufferer. The key is to protect the sore when it’s vulnerable to damage (using vitamin e) and keep it clean so that your immune system can heal the sore with a scab. Do not touch the sore unnecessarily. Always apply ice as soon as you feel the tingle; drink milk after-it has acidophilus which neutralizes the area. AVOID: salt, arginine, grains, grape juice, almonds, chocolate, soda, coffee, peas, peanuts, gelatin, and obviously any junk food. Take lysine and zinc. Try to integrate garlic and onion into your meals as they fight viruses. Apply witch hazel to dry out the sore and use acyclovir or a strong medication frequently. Good luck!

  18. Hello folks I’ve had hvs1 since age 10. Over the decades I’ve learn that any coke product sodas etc r the biggest anhibitors. I changed all my diet entirely meaning gcn vitamins vitally for men 30-50 and DSMO cream and most recent lysine FM yogurt. Been clear, all’s been thinking of quick clear solution 6 month. I suggest reading ferrall never an out brake. Very good info we need to cleanse our bods. Good luck all.

  19. Hi again, a friend of mine no relationship said quick clear worked for her bf now hubby. He took 90 day product and swears by it n will not use another tthing. Check out DMSO for those of u still curious what helps.

  20. Hi all – a great tip is to take Acidophilus on a daily basis – it is a simple, cheap probiotic and it helps prevent cold sores from occurring. You can also take a small dose of Lysine, 500-1000 grams a day and it will keep them away. If you do get one, put a drop of tea tree oil on it 2 or 3 times a day and it will the thing right up. Hope this helps, I have had cold sores for the last 7 years and this limits them to one or so a year. Good luck!
