Dr Oz: Energy Drink Addiction: How To Quit Caffeine

Dr Oz did a segment on the dangers of Energy Drinks and how to quit caffeine.  Many Americans have turned to Energy Drinks to get a high level of energy all day long, but that instant jolt of energy makes your body’s energy crash when you come back down.  Doctor Oz said that there is more to the buzz than you might think.

Dr Oz: Energy Drink Addiction

You are exhausted and need a boost of energy, so you reach for an Energy Drink.  It is estimated that by the end of this year, the sales of Energy Dr Oz Energy Drink AddictionDrinks will reach $9 billion.  Energy Drinks have triple the caffeine compared to a regular cup of coffee.  Dr Oz said that caffeine is addictive, can wreak havoc on your stomach and can even cause a Heart Arrhythmia.

Doctor Oz found one lady who is so addicted to Energy Drinks that she bought a mini fridge so that she can keep them in her bedroom.  She drinks 16 cans of Energy Drinks every single day, so Dr Oz asked her why she can’t get through the day without all 16 cans?  She said she started drinking Energy Drinks when she was going through her divorce and was having a really hard time.  She did not want her three kids to see her being sad, so the energy from the drinks put a smile on her face so that she could be a more energetic and happy mom.  But now it is a habit and the more she drinks, the more she needs to drink.

Dr Oz: Energy Drinks Are Like Drugs

Dr Oz said that Energy Drinks are like drugs, and that people certainly get addicted to them.  Samantha Heller, RD, Clinical Nutrition Coordinator at CT Griffin Hospital, joined Dr Oz and said that her biggest concern is that Energy Drinks are completely unregulated by the FDA, so we do not even know what is in them.  Basically, you are getting undeclared substances in large quantities, so it is not just the caffeine that you have to worry about.  The FDA has said that up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is safe, which is about four cups (8 ounces each) of coffee, but there is at least 1200 mg of caffeine in 16 Energy Drinks.  Dr Oz said that these Energy Drink Companies are including other ingredients that increases the caffeine like Guarana, Kola Nut, Yerba Mate and Cocoa, but they are not including the extra caffeine on the product’s label.  Dr Oz said that his is like eating an omelet but not counting the calories in the cheese because you say it is all natural.

Dr Oz: Caffeine Toxicity

Many people abuse Energy Drinks thinking that they are safe, but a popular journal has found that they can cause Caffeine Toxicity which leads to liver damage, kidney failure, heart failure, heart attacks and even death.  A kid in their 20’s had a heart attack from drinking too many Energy Drinks.

Dr Oz: How To Quit Energy Drinks

Dr Oz asked Samantha Heller how to get off of caffeine and Energy Drinks.  If you go cold turkey, you will get nausea, vomiting and severe headaches.  So  you should slowly ween yourself off of Energy Drinks one by one until you break your Energy Drink Addiction.  You can try products like Coffee Yogurt or White Tea, which have much less caffeine and are generally good for you, as a tool to quit Energy Drinks.

    I have been drinkin about 3 energy drinks a day! I am a single mother of 3 children under 5 and I was attending medical school. I used energy drinks to keep me going. I have no help with my children so I need more energy from the time I wake up till 9pm! I would like to know what kind of foods or other solutions are there for safe energy! I graduated college last month but I’m on the energy drinks as hard as ever! Thank you
