Doctor Oz did a show called “Summer Beware” and one of the topics was called “CSI: Food Poisoning.” Food poisoning is one of summer’s big concerns because it can cause nausea, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea and even kill you. Did you know that Food Poisoning could be life threatening? Bacterial infections from Food Poisoning put 300,000 Americans in the hospital each year and Food Poisoning kills 5,000 Americans each year. The best way to save your life is to know how you got Food Poisoning, when you got Food Poisoning and where you got Food Poisoning. Leigh Vinocur joined Dr Oz to helps us avoid Food Poisoning this summer.
Staphylococcus Food Poisoning Symptoms
– Staphylococcus hits within 6-12 hours
– Watery Diarrhea
– Abdominal Pain
Staphylococcus is found in things like pasta salad, but Dr Oz said it can even be found in cake. Staphylococcus strikes almost immediately and can even make you vomit within an hour. Vomiting is the hallmark symptom of Staphylococcus Poisoning. Staph multiplies in food quickly and forms a toxin, even if the food is being refrigerated.
E. Coli Food Poisoning Symptoms
– E. Coli hits within 12-24 hours
– Watery Diarrhea
– Rare Vomitting
E Coli is found in things like the lettuce on a burger. The E. Coli bacteria grow and get into your stomach, where your body wants to kill the bacteria. E. Coli can get into your colon and then into your blood stream, which can be dangerous because in your blood stream, E Coli gives you Sepsis.
Salmonella Food Poisoning Symptoms
– Salmonella hits within 24-48 hours
– Severe Stomach Pain
– Diarrhea with blood and mucus
Salmonella is found in chicken, raw meat, and uncooked eggs (which are used in Caesar dressing and Hollandaise Sauce). If you are immune compromised, young or old, Leigh Vinocur said that Salmonella can be very dangerous. Salmonella most commonly happens because animals live in unsanitary conditions with their feces. I try to eat kosher organic meat only, because I feel like they are raised in a more clean environment – what do you think? Dr Oz said to follow LIFO – Last In First Out when you pack a picnic. Put the food nearest the opening of your cooler that you will eat first. Also, bury your cooler in the sand so that it will stay cooler. Leigh Vinocur said she uses color coded cutting boards so that she does not use the same cutting board for her salad as she does for her raw chicken. Do not cross contaminate, wash your hands and make sure to cook your meat to a high enough temperature. Dr Oz said that you should use a Temperature Probe to make sure that your beef cooks to 160 degrees and chicken should cook to 165 degrees.
