Dr Oz gave a list of foods that you should eat tonight to make sure that you get a good night’s sleep. Doctor Oz was joined by Paulette Lambert, a Registered Dietitian, to discuss which foods help induce sleep and which foods keep us from falling asleep.
Dr Oz: Tart Cherry Juice & Warm Milk Help You to Fall Asleep
Dr Oz said that the first category of Foods to Snooze are drinks. What do you think is best to drink before going to bed: warm milk, wine or Tart Cherry Juice? Warm milk is great because it is naturally high in Tryptophan, plus it has a little sugar so that the chemicals that make you fall asleep can move across your brain. Also, a new study showed that drinking Tart Cherry Juice can help to reduce insomnia. So drink 8 ounces of Tart Cherry Juice in the morning and another 8 ounces 2 hours before you go to bed. And for all of you who thought that wine helps you to fall asleep the best – this is a common misconception. Dr Oz said that wine just makes you have a dysfunctional sleep where you keep waking up throughout the night.
Dr Oz: Spinach Restless Leg Syndrome Remedy & Turkey
Dr Oz said that the second category of Foods to Snooze is dinner. What helps you to sleep better at night: spaghetti and meat sauce, a turkey burger with spinach leaves or a Chinese broccoli dish over rice? Dr Oz said that turkey is high in Tryptophan, just like milk, plus it changes your Melatonin and creates Serotonin so that you are in a good mood. The spinach in the turkey burger has been shown to help people with Restless Leg Syndrome.
Dr Oz: Best Bedtime Snack to Fall Asleep
Dr Oz said that the third category of Foods to Snooze is snacks – specifically bedtime snacks. Which snack will help you to sleep the best: cheese and crackers, fruit cups or chocolate? The cheese and crackers, specifically 100% whole grain crackers, help you to sleep the best. The whole grain crackers are high in complex carbs which helps you to create more Seratonin and the cheese is high in Tryptophan.
