Dr Oz: Genetically Modified Foods or GMO Foods & Monsanto’s GMO Seeds

Dr Oz did a segment called “Dr Oz Investigates Genetically Modified Food,” which is quite a controversial topic.  Doctor Oz said that foods are being genetically changed to grow faster and to resist disease, but when he polled his audience, 80% of them said they would not buy packaged foods with Genetically Modified Organisms or GMO ingredients.  My personal observation on this poll result is that, notwithstanding consumer preferences for foods not containing GMO (at least in the studio audience), unless you exclusively buy organic products, you cannot be assured that food you buy for your family will not contain GMO ingredients.

    Unfortunately, if you see who subsidizes the research being done at these land grant universities (like her UC Davis), oftentimes you will find it is Monsanto’s money. With cutbacks in state budgets (especially in California!), the agribusiness industry has swooped in to “save the day” (or, more likely, to exploit the chance to manipulate and control the research data).

    To date, Monsanto (and other agrichemical companies) have repeatedly refused to allow independent scientists to have access to their patented seeds in order to do the necessary long-term efficacy studies. That way, Monsanto can claim, “it is impossible to design a long-term safety test in humans.” However, because we have been consuming GMO ingredients without our knowledge for over a decade, we are serving as the lab rats for Monsanto!

    And what little corporate-sponsored research is being done is cherry-picked; results that are questionable is frequently suppressed. Control of information allows them to convincingly perpetuate a facade of safety, because any indications that their products are not safe never sees the light of day.

    What little independent research is out there is bad-mouthed, and the scientists harassed with campaigns to discredit them. They are playing hard-ball with those who don’t tow the line.

    As for the government oversight, look who is the current food safety czar: Michael Taylor — who also served as Monsanto’s lawyer and its vice president.

    Wow way to go Dr. Oz!! After encouraging vaccination, i didn’t think Dr. Oz had it in him to take on such a controversial issue. The issue of GMO’s really needs to be discussed in the mainstream This is too important an issue for so few people even know there is such a thing!!.

    It is my firm belief that the outbreaks of Salmonella and E-coli are coming from microbial bio-control products:

    Salmonella & e-coli on food crops & the egg recall? LIVING MICROORGANISMS being used in microbial bio-control products & added to chicken feed. Blessings from the FDA,USDA & EPA. In fact, “inventors­” with the USDA are listed on several patents.

    Melamine from cows milk? Linked to microbial bio-control products; by way of capsules United States Patent 6506397 (for one); “Microcapsule according to claim 21, wherein said capsule shell is formed by condensation of formaldehyde with at least one of urea & MELAMINE.”

    Biotech corporations DO NOT want the food borne illnesses to be linked to the farms; where microbial bio-control products are being used as pesticides­, fungicide and insecticides

    Microbial bio-control products are deemed \natural\; \active ingredient­\ is naturally found; i.e., soil. Some \active ingredient­s\ has been shown as low as 0.07% (listed on the product/s label). \NATURAL\? What are the other 0.93% ingredient­s in these products?

    My son worked for a biotech research and development microbial \company\ in Davis, California (where UC Davis is located). This \company\ searches the WORLD for \novel\ or NEW microorganisms (bacteria and fungus) and or new strains of known microorganism; if they are \product candidates\ they are then used on food crops in the field and/or for insect control.

    In the \company’s\ quest for the “novel” microorganism there are many articles describing just where this search by “the company” has/had taken place; soil, plants, plant roots, lichen, leaves and/or itʼs litter, mulch and other decaying organic matter, fruit, bird feathers, dead insects, lake beds, forests, dunes and ocean caves, animals from terrestrial sources, marine sources (sponges, sea urchins, etc.) insects of all kinds, rain forests, jungles, dry creek beds, orchards, farm fields, and gardens.

    They have published they have microorganisms from New Zealand, the Amazon, Mexico, Honduras, and Micronesia. The “company” also uses “microbe hunters” and has collaborative agreements with other biotechnology companies relating to different strains of bacteria and fungi. The CNet News article, “Attack of the killer microbes” stated, “The company is also working on a pesticide with a microbe discovered by a group of researchers in Siberia that once worked for a bioweapons lab.” At last count; the company had over 23,000 microorganisms in itʼs culture collection.

    While still working on his Bachelor of Science Degree; with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry; my son, after only 5 months and 9 days on the job as an \assistant researcher\ to gain “lab experience”; had been throwing up for days and bloody pus was draining from his nose – told his supervisor he was sick and had to clock out. He immediately went to an emergency medical clinic; was given a strong antibiotic. Three (3) days later the left half of his face and teeth were numb. Around 4 days later he was scheduled for the 1st of what would become 4 MAJOR sinus surgeries; because of severe infections (bacteria AND/or fungus) in his sinus cavities. As to his 1st sinus surgery; his family was told that without it he would have died. He also stopped producing B-cells required by the body to fight infections; for 3 years, every 28 days he was hooked to an intravenous pump at the hospital, receiving immunoglobulin infusions to replace his lost B-cells. He, to this day is still sick with sinus infections and with little immune system left.

    Eighteen (18) bacteria and fungus that have been medically identified in my son’s blood serum, sputum and nose cultures and/or IgG MAST blood tests can be directly linked to the biotech “company” my son worked for; in either experiments that were conducted in the “company” lab (or off site farms) and/or the “company” products that are being sold as microbial bio-control; pesticides, fungicides, mycocides, insecticides.. etc.

    Nine (9) of the bacteria and fungus that was medically identified in my son can be attributed to one patent alone; with the CEO and founder of \the company\ being listed as the \first named inventor\. FOUR DAYS after my son told his supervisor he was sick and sought emergency medical care; ALL FOUR of the company’s scientists (listed as \inventors\ on the patent) started signing away their interest rights to the patent to a company out of state.

    The “company’ says they do not use genetic modification or genetic engineering methods; however, when their microbial bio-control products ACTIVE INGREDIENTS are as low as 0.07%; NOT 100%, then how can one “assume” there isn’t genetic modification and/or genetic engineering happening? The public is only allowed to know of the “active ingredient” and that is all.

    Working in a research and development biotech company is NOT SAFE. There isn’t any way to find what one has been exposed to because these companies claim “trade secrets”, “proprietary and/or confidential information”. On the east cost; in Connecticut, Becky McClain; a molecular microbiologist of twenty three (23) years and working in a stem-cell research biotech lab is the first to have won a victory in the courts with respect to proving that she had been exposed to a virus that leaves her paralyzed approximately twelve (12) times a month.

    There are many MANY incidences such as the Becky McClain’s and my son in the world; however, more times than not… the biotech industry, with it’s powerful lobbyist and government officials, who have financial interests in the biotech industry; and the corrupt workers’ compensation system simply roll over “the little guy” and it is the injured and/or sick employee who pays the price for the lack of transparency in the arena of biotech. In the case of my son; it can now be proven the workers’ compensation judge, who decided 100% against my son and found in defendants favor had direct ties to “the company” and” the company’s founder” by way of her husbands employer.

    Again to Pamela Reynolds saying that one “should look at university based research websites”; tell that to Ignacio Chapella; a microbial ecologist and mycologist at the University of California in Berkeley, California. When Chapella; who was up for Tenure, objected to the University of California-Berkeley’s faculty taking money from a biotech company because of the presence of transgenic DNA in Mexican maize, he was denied tenure by the university. Chapella fought long and hard and eventually was given tenure in 2005.

    Chapella has also spoken out against the $500 million deal between UC Berkeley, UI Urbana-Champaign, and British Petroleum to research the development of biofuels, which may involve genetically engineering microorganisms and plants. The grant went into effect on November 14, 2007.

    This country; as well as the world, needs to demand and GET honest answers when it comes to emerging biotech issues.

    This is very serious. Enough studies have not been done to conclude that GMO’s are safe. Studies that have been done on animals are quite alarming. More research needs to be done and that is unbias research. There is so much of this stuff in our food/chains you would be amazed. Soy lethin for example, in most everything. Breads, boxed goods… everything. I can tell you one truth… take it how thou may. A child suffering with ADD was put on an mainly GMO free diet and the results were really mind boggling. Good results. The results took about a month to be noticed. Organic food is not cheap and there are some products that you can buy in larger stores that are organic and you can save some money that way. It took time and a lot of research as our decision was made to clear our home of many GMO products but we are glad we did. Spend time to do your research you will be amazed.

    It is said that Biopesticides provide Human and environmental safety and are
