Dr Oz: Glutathione Antioxidants & Milk Thistle: Antioxidant Superhero

By on February 3, 2011

Dr Oz did a segment called The Superhero of Antioxidants: Glutathione.  Doctor Oz said that Glutathione is the most powerful antioxidant that you never even heard of before.  Dr David Katz joined Dr Oz and said that unlike other antioxidants, Glutathione is made in your body.  Another reason that Glutathione is the most important Antioxidant is because it is the one that your body relies on to defend yourself against toxins.

Dr Oz: How Glutathione Works

Dr Oz did a demonstration to explain how Glutathione works.  In your body you have Glutathione and you have normal cells and toxic cells.  Toxic cells are your own cells that have been Dr Oz The Superhero of Antioxidants Glutathionedamaged from free radicals, or they can be cells from outside of your body that got inside.  The Glutathione removes the toxic cells.  If you do not have enough Glutathione, then the toxic cells do not get removed from your body and you do not heal yourself.  Your body can only help you recover if you help your body to do it.

Dr Oz: How Do You Know If You Have Enough Glutathione?

Dr Oz asked Dr Katz how we can tell if we have enough Glutathione.  Katz said that if you have a chronic disease like Diabetes or Cancer, you probably have low levels of Glutathione and should have your Glutathione levels checked.  If you are chronically fatigued, low levels of Glutathione could be both the cause and effect of this as well.  Dr David Katz said that when you give people Glutathione, amazing things can happen.  One of his patients has Parkinsons Disease and gets Glutathione injected into his vein weekly, and it has helped to stabilize his condition.  The Glutathione has not made the Parkinsons go away, but it also has not gotten any worse which is a big deal!

Dr Oz: How To Increase Glutathione Levels

Dr Oz said that the following are The Building Blocks of Glutathione and by doing all of them, you can increase the Glutathione Levels in your body:

Dr Oz: Sulfur-Rich Vegetables Increase Glutathione

By eating sulfur-rich vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, garlic and onions, you help your body to manufacture more Glutathione and so you increase your Glutathione Levels in your body.

Dr Oz: Selenium-Rich Foods Increase Glutathione

Dr David Katz told Dr Oz that by eating Selenium-Rich Foods like oats, brazil nuts, tuna and black beans, you help your body’s assembly line to manufacture Glutathione better.  Dr Oz said that he eats brazil nuts almost every single day.

Dr Oz: Milk Thistle & Vitamin B6 Increase Glutathione

Dr David Katz said that supplements can help increase your Glutathione as well.  Try taking 1.5 mg of Vitamin B6 every day and 200 mg of Milk Thistle every day.  You cannot take Glutathione as a pill, but these supplements are a good option to help boost your body’s Glutathione.  Milk Thistle contains an active ingredient that is so powerful in helping your liver function that it can even help cirrhosis of the liver.  Milk Thistle supports the function of your liver’s cells and protects them from free radicals.  And of course by helping your liver out, your liver is able to produce Glutathione better.

Dr Oz: Exercise Boosts Glutathione

Dr Oz’s final tip always comes back to exercise it seems.  Regular moderate exercise boosts Glutathione and increases your blood flow to your kidney and liver so that everything works better.

  1. Hello Dr. Oz,
Great article! I have recently been introduced to a supplement which contains milk thistle along with other ingredients. This supplement produces around 300% more Glutathione within the body!! There is also studies out, including Peer 1 reviews which show that your T-Bars within the blood are that of a 20 year old…….no matter your current age!!! Have you heard of this product?

  2. ginger magleby says:

DR. OZ HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF GLUTITHIONE PATCHES? I HAVE USED THEM FOR 4 YEARS AND THEY HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE. I’M 72 YEARS OLD AND COULD ONLY PLAY TENNIS 1 DAY A WEEK AND WAS ALWAYS STIF & SORE. NOW I PLAY TENNIS 3 TIMES A WEEK AND DON’T EVEN KNOW I’VE PLAYED.
    BEST REGARDS,
    GINGER MAGLEBY/702-873-4421

  3. Two questions about February 3rd’s show:

    1) There actually are Glutathione pills made by many companies, but Dr. Oz’s guest said that it isn’t in a pill, so we must take things that boost our levels of it. Are those pills unproven or dangerous?

    2) Why was 1.5 mg of B6 recommended? Did they mean 150 mg? 100 mg is the common dosage found in stores. I want to take the right amount. Will you clarify this?

  4. There is a product out there called Immunocal out of Canada. It naturally boosts your Glutathione by providing the ingredients your body needs to make it’s own Glutathione. Look it up. It has helped my mom, dad and myself tremendously.

It’s listed in the Physican’s Desk Reference, Pharmacist’s Red Book and is listed on the FDA’s site.

  5. Hi Doc.
I saw you on the Dr OZ show where you discussed what I thought was a great supplement to DETOX the liver. I however lost the name of the supplement and would appreciate you help.
    Best Regards
    Peter

  6. Should someone with Primary Progressive MS take Glutathione and other products that “boost” the immune system? Wouldn’t this speed up the autoimmune damage to one’s cells?

  7. I am interesting in finding out the brand name of the liquid milk thistle you recommended on your show.
    Thanks,
    Pat

  8. Suze Collister says:

My brother has been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. He is currently taking 280 mg of Milk Thistle per day. Should he also take 1.5(or 150mg) of B6 per day and would it also be beneficial to take Nopal Cactus supplement-1000 mg/day? We’re trying to find the right mix to take of all these supplements or others that would be most beneficial.

  9. Dr.Oz,

I would really like to raise my glutathione levels. Is there glutathione supplements?
I heard that taking glutathione supplements orally, does not work well. Have you heard
of Protandim? Can you please tell me the glutathione supplement?

    Thank,
    Jane

  10. Take N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine to boost your body’s supply of glutathione. Glutathione isn’t readily absorbed in the body when taken orally, but cysteine is. PreToxx is a supplement that contains cysteine, milk thistle and other powerful antioxidants.
