Dr Oz: Knee Joint Pain

Dr Oz did a segment on how to stop the pain in your joints – specifically Knee Pain.  Why do you get Knee Joint Pain?  And how do you stop the pain?  Doctor Oz and April, his Assistant-of-the-Day spoke about everything related to Knee Pain, because 10 million people see a doctor for knee treatments every year.

Dr Oz: Knee Pain Causes

Dr Oz said that the following all cause Knee Pain: Dr Oz Knee Pain

1. Weather – this causes Knee Pain because it can cause the fluid in your joints to expand

2.  Infections – different infections can cause a whole slew of problems if you get them in your knee

3.  Shoes – if you wear the wrong shoes, it can throw off your balance and hurt your knees

4.  Obesity – this is a big cause of knee pain because it increases the stress on the cartilage in your knee

Doctor Oz said that calcium and medications generally do not cause any joint issues.

Dr Oz: Knee Pain & Obesity

Dr Oz said that you can imagine the cartilage in your joints as being like a trampoline.  If you are not overweight, it is easy to jump on the trampoline.  But if you gain 30 pounds and become obese, then when you jump up and down on the trampoline, it is very uncomfortable.  Doctor Oz said that for every extra pound you gain, its an extra 3-6 pounds of pressure on your joints.  So if you gain 30 pounds, it feels like 100 pounds to your knees.

Dr Oz: Capsaicin Cream for Knee Pain

Dr Oz gave a few suggestions for what we can do to manage our joint pain.  If you just hurt your joint, then use ice.  Also, if you have swelling, then a cold compress can help.  However, if you have tight muscles, heat is a better treatment than cold.  The general rule of thumb is to apply heat or cold compresses for 20 minutes at a time.

Dr Oz said that Capsaicin Cream works very well for numbing your joint, and it works even better if you give yourself a massage with the cream.  You could also use a Numbing Cream instead of Capsaicin Cream.  Another option is to take 1200 mg of Chondroitin Sulfate to help reduce the breakdown of your meniscus.
