Dr Oz: Measles, Small Pox & Novel Swine Flu: 3 Biggest Threats

Dr Oz: 3 Biggest Pandemic Threats

Dr Oz presented his Pandemic Survival Kit, and then spoke about the three biggest threats that our nation currently faces.  What is the next big pandemic?  Doctor Oz said it is not a matter of if it will happen, but when it will happen, and it could wipe out millions like pandemics have throughout history.  Here are a few global contagions just to name a few.  The Bubonic Plague wiped out 1/3 of the population in just four years.  Small Pox killed 300 million people in the 20th century alone.  The Spanish Flu killed 50 million people in one year.  We have seen Sars in our lifetime, and H1N1 which effected 80 million people in this country alone.  The next pandemic could kill millions – are we prepared?

Dr Oz: Novel Swine Flu

Dr Oz said that the first big threat is a Novel Swine Flu, which the CDC (Center for Disease Control) is tracking right now.  It is a new form of the Swine Flu that has combined with H1N1.  Several kids have already been infected by the Novel Swine Flu, but Dr Thomas Frieden from the CDC said that luckily all of the kids are ok.  If the Novel Swine Flu were to spread, they already have a vaccine prepared and they could start producing it.  He said that one of the keys to stopping a pandemic is to catch it quickly.  When H1N1 first hit in Mexico, it took a couple of months before it was identified.

Dr Oz: Small Pox

Dr Oz said that anyone born before the 1970’s probably got the Small Pox Vaccine, but they stopped giving the vaccine around Dr Oz Bioterrorism1972.  Frances Townsend said that the scary thing about Small Pox is that we still do have live samples of Small Pox in our government labs, and if a rogue scientist with a connection to terrorism somehow got their hands on it, they could use it for a major Bioterrorism Attack.
