Dr Oz: Medical Myths Exposed & Old Wives Tales: Fact or Fiction

Doctor Oz did a show on Medical Myths Exposed to teach whether certain Old Wives Tales are fact or fiction.  Old wives tales and medical myths are passed down from generation to generation (especially in my family! thanks grandma!).  Does vitamin C prevent colds?  Should you wait one hour after you eat before swimming?  If you stare into the sun, can you go blind?  If you have a burn, should you put butter on it?  Does drinking milk put you to sleep?  Should you drink 8 glasses of water a day?  Does Chocolate Cause Acne? Does sugar make children hyper?  I wish Dr Oz had answered all of these questions about Old Wives Tales, but I’m glad he at least answered some of them!  I will be sending this article to my mother and grandmother!  Old Wives Tales

Does Sugar Make Kids Hyper?

Dr Oz said it is a myth that sugar makes kids hyper.  There is roughly the same amount of sugar in a candy bar and in an apple, and there is no correlation between kids being hyper and eating sugar.

Do You Need to Drink 8 Glass of Water a Day?

Dr Oz said that in 1945, a study was done on how many glasses of water you need each day to replenish yourself, and they concluded that you need 8 glasses of water.  However, some of your food also has water in it (especially fruits and vegetables), so the water in your food can be subtracted from the 8 glasses of water that you need each day.

Does Most of Your Heat Escape Through Your Head?

Dr Oz was joined by Bill Nye the Science Guy to answer if most of the heat escapes through your head.  Bill Nye said that the keyword in this old wives tale is “MOST.”  A lot of heat is lost through your head, but not most of the heat.  Bill Nye used an infrared camera to show where a person loses the most heat from their body.  There is much more surface area of skin on your arms, legs and face for example where you lose heat from.  What was especially interesting to me about the infrared camera is that it did not show a lot of heat being lost through a person’s nose, but in the winter, this is one of the places on my face that gets coldest first!

Does Going Out in the Cold or Rain Make You Sick?

Bill Nye and Dr Oz said this is a myth.  You get sick because of germs, viruses, microbes, and bacteria.  Water takes away heat 25 times faster than air, so if your clothing gets wet, you will get cold faster.

Beer Before Liquor, Never Sicker; Liquor Before Beer, You’re in the Clear?

Dr Oz was joined by Aaron Carroll, author of Don’t Swallow Your Gum, and they both agreed that its a myth.  Whether you drink beer first or liquor first, it all goes to the same place!

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away?

Dr Oz said that this is true… so we should all eat an apple a day.  However, if my doctor was Dr Oz, I’m not sure I’d really want to keep him away!

Can You Color Your Hair While Pregnant?

Dr Oz was told by Aaron Carroll that this is a myth and that you can color or dye your hair while you are pregnant.  I don’t know about how others feel, but I personally would not take the chance of them finding out in 30 years that dying your hair while pregnant can negatively impact your unborn fetus.  What do you think?
