Dr Oz: IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Do you have an ache in your belly or feel bloated?  Irritated Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a condition that affects 55 million people, with the majority being women.  You may have IBS and don’t even realize it.  Dr Oz brought up an audience member who stated that her bowels are “out of whack” when she is stressed.  According to Dr Oz, the key trigger to IBS is stress.  In this segment, Dr Oz gave the effects of IBS with a demonstration.

Dr Oz: IBS Symptoms

– Diarrhea
– Constipation
– Pellet stools
– Flat stools
– Bloating

Dr Oz asked the audience member when was the last time she had stress and she stated it was just last week.

– In laws

The stresses were labeled on blocks.  Dr Oz had the audience member pick her two biggest stresses.  She chose “work” and “house.”  Dr Oz then placed the stresses on top of two models of two intestines with tubes running down.  Dr Oz poured the contents of the “work” stress down the first tube.  Blue liquid ran down the tube, indicating diarrhea.  Dr Oz then poured the contents of the next stress block, “house,” down the second intestinal tube.  Small pellets ran through the tube, indicating pellet stool—another symptom of IBS.

Dr Oz gave an animation for further demonstration.  He showed a picture of a large and small intestine.  He showed the bowel movement going through the intestine.  As it moved, it squeezed through the intestine and caused bloating because it was stuck and couldn’t get out.  As you may have already guessed, this symptom is constipation.

Comments to Dr Oz: Peppermint Oil Capsules for IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  1. I’ve heard of people using peppermint oil with success, but be sure to get the “enteric coated” peppermint oil capsules. They make it through the stomach and dissolve in your bowels.

Otherwise some of the oil can be destroyed, and more important, it can cause major stomach upset. This is especially true for those of us with GERD (acid reflux).

  2. I have had IBS all yr with Indigestion. My doc gave me the same advice-put me on a fructose and Lactose free diet-Sorbital, I;m also taking Metamucil 3 times a day as well as amineral oil and and another Liq-3Tab spoons a day-adds up to nine-I;m better at times but not like I should be. My Appitite is not so good

  3. Terri Dier says:

How many capusles a day should they take to get this under control? Any information that you can give me on this would be helpful. My daughter has been suffering from this since she was an infant and other than being on medication her whole life, this would be a great alternative.

    Thank you!

  4. I;ve had seizures throughout my life although I;m Seizre free now-srgery, I still take many meds. Because of Dilantin levels as well other ones I can;t take supplememts-He told me not to take peppermint, Its helped pain before-cycles. I don;t what to think of problems. I woke up bad indigestion this morning. My bed is also elevated. Its hard to remember to take my med 3 times a day said above/ Is indigestion and IBM connected. He gave me a bottle of magnesium it didn;t work at all, last visit. It comes and goes, better-was started-gastrologist-not Nuer!
I have 3 more doses today, helps at times! So long-Trouble! But I read in the past about peppermints-they worked for me on other stomach pains He must have his reasons. It may effect these meds

  8. Natalie Summers says:

Can you help me find a source of enteric coated peppermint capsules that don’t have other ingredients, like fennel, oregano, etc. I’m very allergic and really must use single ingredient products, even if the other ingredients are felt to help IBS. I cannot find enteric coated JUST peppermint oil caps without these other ingredients.
