Dr Oz: Sleep Doctor Michael Breus

Dr Oz said that you can lose three times more fat sleeping than lying awake in bed.  Dr Michael Breus, author of The Sleep Doctor’s Diet Plan, gave tips on How To Sleep Yourself Thin!  Dr Breus has been on the Dr Oz Show before, and you can read recaps of those segments here: Dr Oz: Insomnia Causes & Insomnia Cures and Dr Oz: Sleepy’s Dr Breus Signature Bed.  Doctor Oz said that this Sleep Diet is so simple that you do not have to change your diet or exercise plan in order to lose weight – you just have to sleep.  Sound too good to be true?

Dr Oz: Sleep Diet

Dr Oz said that sleep is the missing link to any diet.  You can burn 150 more calories by sleeping an extra hour each night, Dr Oz Dr Michael Breus Smoothie Recipewhich comes out to be a total weight loss of 14 pounds over a year.  During REM Sleep, your body burns more calories than when you are awake.  Doctor Oz said that if you sleep less than 6.5 hours of sleep at night, then you are more likely to gain weight because you will be hungrier and the hormone in charge of telling you when to stop eating won’t work so you won’t know when you are full.  Plus, lack of sleep slows down your metabolism.

Doctor Oz asked Dr Michael Breus, how can you burn more calories by sleeping?  Dr Breus said that your brain is key.  When you go into a REM cycle of sleep, then you burn more calories than during any other cycle of sleep.  Plus, your core body temperature increases which helps you to burn more fat as well.  I was shocked to hear that you can lose more calories during REM Sleep, because your body goes into paralysis during this cycle so that you do not act out your dreams, but I would have thought that you would burn less calories due to your inactivity.

Here are Dr Michael Breus’ three tips for how to lose weight while you sleep:

Reset Your Alarm Clock

Dr Breus said that the worst invention ever was the snooze button, so  you should stop using it!  In the morning is when you are getting your REM sleep, but it gets cutoff by the alarm.  So by setting the alarm early and using the snooze button, you are depriving yourself of this great calorie burning time!  Instead, set your alarm clock for the time that you will really wake up at.  Also, you should set another alarm to go off 8 hours before you have to get up so that it can remind you of your bedtime!

Take A Nap-A-Latte

Next, Dr Breus told Dr Oz that people often feel tired around midday, so you should Take A Nap-A-Latte, which is a special sleep technique.  You get a cup of cool drip coffee and drink it as fast as you can, like you are downing a shot of vodka.  Then lie down and take a nap for 20 minutes.  The caffeine will kick-in after 30 minutes so that you will wake up full of energy from your nap.

Don’t Go To Bed Hungry

Finally, Dr Michael Breus told Doctor Oz that a small snack might make sense a couple of hours before going to bed.  But not just any snack, it has to be a snack with foods that help you to sleep.
