Dr Oz: Depression Natural Cures

In this segment, Dr Oz introduced Pina Loguidice, ND—The Co Medical Director of Innersource Natural Health. According to Pina, the best cures come from nature, which can be powerful mood boosters. She stated that she prescribed natural remedies often to her patients. First, she looked at a patient’s diet and exercise plan and then looked for the type of medications they were already taking. All of these factors helped her make a decision as to which natural product she should prescribe.

Dr Oz: St John’s Wort for Depression

St. John’s Wort worked as an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor). Dr Oz Natural Anti-Depressants This medication can elevate your mood. St. John’s Wort is antiviral. Purchase St. John’s Wort for $6 per bottle at any health food store.

Dr Oz: SAMe Mood Booster

Comments to Dr Oz: St John’s Wort, 5HTP, Saffron: Depression Natural Cures

  1. I’ve considered 5HTP for myself or my son, however, never try anything without Googling it. Apparently, a particular impurity found in batches made by a Japanese company can cause problems.
Also, it is not recommended for the following:
Do not use 5-HTP is you are currently taking any of the following medications:

Anti-depressant drugs; Monoamine oxidase inhibitors; Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors; Tricyclic medications; Weight Loss medications; Anti-parkinson medications; Barbiturates and other tranquilizing drugs; Antihistamines and cold medications; Alcoholic beverages; Intravenous drugs; Cancer chemotherapy or antibiotic medications.

We take antihistamines. Not sure what the interactions or side effects would be. It is also not recommended with certain medical conditions, such as flushing or rash, which I can get from rosacea. Not sure it would be worth the risk……

  2. Lisa,

Avoid taking 5-HTP with sedating antihistamines; the combination can lead to drowsiness. If you do not take a “D” allergy medication, there should be no effects. 5-htp in doses up to 100 mg is completely safe. Above that it would be best to take a prescribed drug to prevent the absorption of too much serotonin in you blood. Avoid combining with other drugs that act to reabsorb serotonin such as St. Johns Wort. This could potentially lead to the uptake of too much serotonin and the development of serious condition known as Serotonin Syndrome. I would stick to just HTP and not a combination of drugs which is often advertised as names such as “Happy Pills”. I am not a doctor, I have just done a lot of research on this compound. I have started taking it and it has been very effective for me. Hope this helps!

    – Joe

  3. Is it safe to take 5HTP and saffron at the same time?
