Dr Oz: The Biggest Lies You’ve Ever Been Told About Cancer

By on February 3, 2011

Dr Oz did a segment The Biggest Lies You’ve Ever Been Told About Cancer.  Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death, but are you afraid of all the wrong things?  Doctor Oz said that these are not usually lies you heard from a doctor, but rather lies that you tell each other.  Dr Oz was joined by 3 cancer experts for this segment: Dr Dara Richardson-Heron, Dr William Li and Dr Ilana Cass.

Dr Oz: Biggest Cancer Lies

Here are the top lies you might believe about cancer: Dr Oz Cancer Lies

Dr Oz: You Don’t Have Cancer Or Everyone Has Cancer

Many of us think that since we eat healthy, exercise, get 8 hours of sleep, don’t smoke, don’t drink and only buy organic food that there is no way we have cancer cells growing inside of us… right?  Wrong!  Dr William Li said that the truth is that we all have microscopic cancers growing inside of us all the time.  Cells are always dividing and you just need one cell to make a mistake and mutate.  Most abnormal cells do not become cancer though, because our body cleans everything with our immune system.  But the bottom line is that everyone has a cancer cell in them right now.

Dr Oz asked Dr Li what can we do to avoid these potentially deadly cancer cells from growing?  He dais you should avoid certain things like cigarette smoke, 2nd hand smoke, sun exposure, and too much drinking.  Even preserve meats or processed meats are bad because they have nitrates and preservatives that our body cannot digest and so it turns into carcinogens.  Also, you should add things to your life to boost cancer fighting in your body like restorative sleep and exercise.

Dr Oz: Cancer Is Contagious Or You Can’t Catch Cancer

Dr Oz said that many people believe that cancer is not contagious, unlike colds, the flu, measles, mumps or chicken pox.  Dr Ilana Cass said that certain bacteria and viruses that are contagious can cause cancer.  H Pylori effects 30-40% of Americans and most commonly causes Peptic Ulcer Disease in your stomach, but it can also cause Stomach Cancer.  Researchers are not sure yet how it spreads, but it usually happens in childhood.  Also, it is not clear yet whether treating H Pylori helps to prevent getting Stomach Cancer or not.  Dr Cass said that HPV is common and 20 million Americans are exposed to it. HPV, effects both men and women and can cause Throat Cancer, Anal Cancer and Penile Cancer.  Hepatitis B is also contagious and can cause liver damage they can go on to become Liver Cancer.  How to we treat all of these?  H Pylori can be treated with antibiotic.  There is a HPV Vaccine that is recommended for girls 11 – 26 years old, and it might be beneficial to men but at this point it is not yet recommended.  There is also a Hepatitis B Vaccine that is available and recommended for the whole population.

Dr Oz: Only Check Your Breast For Breast Cancer

This is another Cancer Myth!  Breast Cancer can often be cured, if you find it early enough.  You must do a breast exam once a month, and do it around the same time of the month so that you do not have hormonal fluctuations throwing things off.  Dr Dara Richardson-Heron said that breast tissue goes all the way up to your clavicle and into your arm pit, so you have to check all of the areas of the breast.  Cancer can grow in lymph nodes all the way up the side of your neck as well.

Dr Oz: Inflammatory Breast Cancer

Dr Richardson-Heron said that there is also something called Inflammatory Breast Cancer in which there is no lump at all in your breast.  Instead, you get symptoms like dimpling of the skin, pain or itching, enlarged lymph nodes or inverted nipples.  A lot of doctors do not recognize this and say it is a breast infection.  So when you see your doctor, specifically ask if it could be Inflammatory Breast Cancer.  Dr Dara Richardson-Heron said that Inflammatory Breast Cancer is more common in African American women.

Dr Oz: You Only Get Female Cancers From Your Mother

Another major Cancer Myth!  Dr Oz said that many people seem to think that you are more likely to get Breast Cancer or Ovarian cancer if it is on your mom’s side, but not if it is on your dad’s side.  Dr Ilana Cass said that you get one copy of genes from your mom and one from your dad.  Sometimes there are mutations that are passed down from one generation to another, and it can be from either side.  Learn your family history on both sides of your family!  Dr Cass said another common misconception is that if you inherit a mutated gene, you will automatically get cancer which is not the case at all.  If you have a family history then you can get extra screening or even consider removing organs (like in the case of a history of Breast Cancer), but researchers are still trying to figure out why some people with the mutation get cancer and other do not.  Dr Oz said that it is like your genes load the gun, but your environment pulls the trigger.

Comments to Dr Oz: The Biggest Lies You’ve Ever Been Told About Cancer

  1. do we all hve cancer cells in our bodies,

  2. ruth arciero says:

Why do you do a show on Lupus. The deadliest kind that attacks the vital organs ?

  3. To be fair, call it cancer myth or misunderstanding may be more proper than cancer lies as whoever tells a lie is that he knows it is wrong but tells it anyway. I don’t think that is the case iwth cancer. Those who say cancers are not contagious probably genuinely believe so.

Also, there is a difference between tumor and cancer. Not every tumor is cancerous — it only becomes cancerous when it acquires the ability to be metastasized or spread around. So, a single cell that acquires mutations may be at best tumorous not cancerous. So, we can for sure say everybody has tumor cells in them but not necessarily cancer cells. Just based on my knowledge.
