By on September 28, 2010

Dr Oz did a segment on Thyroid Cancer: Fastest Growing Cancer in Women and followed it up with this segment on how to do a thyroid self exam to detect Thyroid Cancer before it is too  late.  If  you find Thyroid Cancer early, it is 97% curable.  All you need for Dr Oz’s Thyroid Test is a glass of water and a mirror:  Dr Oz Thyroid Cancer Self Exam

Dr Oz’s Thyroid Self Exam

1.  Find your thyroid gland by first locating your Adam’s Apple.  In a man, it is pretty obvious where the Adam’s Apple is, but if you have trouble finding it, the swallow and feel for a lump in your throat – this is the Adam’s Apple.  Move two fingers below the Adam’s Apple and that is where your thyroid is (right above the sternum).

2.  Take a sip of water and tip your head back.  Slowly swallow and feel your trachea while you swallow to see if you feel anything around the area of your Thyroid.

Stages of Thyroid Cancer

If you feel something on your thyroid, the following is the guide that Dr Oz for getting a good idea about what stage of Thyroid Cancer it could be – but of course you should always see your doctor right away as they will be able to tell you best.

Stage 1 Thyroid Cancer – size of a pea (1 cm)

Stage 2 Thyroid Cancer – size of a peanut (2 cm)

Stage 3 Thyroid Cancer – size of a walnut

Stage 4 Thyroid Cancer – size of a lime

Dr Oz said that if it is already the size of a lime, then the cancer usually has gone outside of the thyroid gland.  If you do find a lump, 15-30% of the American population will just have a thyroid nodule and not Thyroid Cancer.  Usually if you have Thyroid Cancer though, you will have to have your thyroid removed and you will take a pill once a day to replace what the thyroid used to do.

I’m thanking you Dr. Oz and sending you an email I just received and replied to that reinforced your warning about x-rays causing thyroid cancer and how to do a thyroid self exam. I don’t know why I didn’t take action sooner. Thanks to my sister and her friend reminding me of your important show on thyroid cancer, I am given a reminder to take positive action to detect the signs of thyroid cancer should they manifest, at the earliest.

    Thank you.

    My email reply:

“Thanks for sending me this Sissa. Please extend my thanks to Faryl! I saw part of the show when it first aired a couple of months back.

I had 10 x-rays done at Southern Maine Medical Center after my December 2006 car accident – through my open mouth – down my throat. I had no lead apron covering my neck (not that it would have mattered as the x-rays went directly into my throat).

The young male technician was in training and the female tech supervising him instructed him about the technique to use. She said it was very difficult to get a good x-ray due to the angle. He took a couple of shots under her supervision and she left the room. When she came back 10 to 15 minutes later, after he’d shot ten x-rays, he told her he still couldn’t get a good picture after ten shots and she gasped and said “how many?” and told him not to take any more [x-rays]. He looked embarrassed, and told me he was sorry. As I was leaving the room our eyes met and I’ll never forget the expression on his face which I can only describe as sorrowful-regret. I left feeling very uncomfortable about having had that many x-rays, my unease heightened by their reactions.

In April of 2007, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and put on thyroid medication. In 2008, I had an absessed tooth and root canal and saw three different dental practitioners who each took one or more x-rays, this time dental, without a lead shield around my neck.

At some point, several months later, I learned that hypothyroidism can be caused by x-rays. The x-rays damage the thyroid which regulates thyroid hormones that ‘run the body’s metabolism’.

It wasn’t until last year that I became aware that it was theorized that too many x-rays can cause thyroid cancer. Then I saw the Dr. Oz show, but had to leave before I saw the part that was to show how to check the thyroid.

When I had x-rays done at Coastal Maine Orthopedics in January of my torn rotator cuff, I asked the tech to cover my neck, as I had seen the Dr. Oz show on x-rays and thyroid cancer. I told her about the ten neck x-rays I had had and the subsequent diagnosis of hypothyroidism. She was suprised that a technician at SMMC had taken that many x-rays. She hadn’t heard about the causal link to thyroid cancer. She covered my neck with a lead lap apron (they didn’t have a neck apron).

Up until today, I had put it on the back shelf. I meant to talk to my doctor about it, but forgot when I saw her in February for my physical. Now, thanks to this reminder, I will talk to my doctor about this and find out how to properly check my neck for any signs of cancer — something I should have done as soon as I became aware of this.

So again, THANK YOU and Faryl for this important message. I will not ignore it. Information / Knowledge is Power. Fear is overcome by taking positive action!

    Love you!

P.S. Just found instructions on Dr. Oz’s website – so simple to do! Just did it and no lumps felt. : ) I will have my doctor check as well.

    Dr Oz Thyroid Cancer Check

Here’s how to do a thyroid exam:

    1. Stand in front of a mirror keeping your eye on the area just below the Adam’s apple and right above the collarbone.

    2. Drink some water and tilt your head back slightly, just enough to keep your eye focused on the thyroid area while you swallow.

    3. As you swallow keep your fingers pressed lightly on the Look and feel for any bulges and bumps(unusual enlargements or swelling).

    4. Repeat a few times – Report any findings to your doctor.

    Thyroid Cancer Symptoms
Dr James Lee said that typically people discover they could have thyroid cancer by going to a physician for a physical exam or when they look in the mirror. Sometimes it is also found as a thyroid nodule during an ultrasound. But here are some other symptoms of Thyroid Cancer that Dr Oz gave:

    – Difficulty Swallowing or Breathing (it can feel like you are breathing through a straw)
    – Hoarseness
    – Lingering Cough Unrelated to a Cold
    – Pain or Lump in Neck
    – Swelling or Fullness in Neck

    Good to know:

Subject: Dr. Oz on mammograms and dental x-rays

On Wednesday, Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms. He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck. Many dentists don’t bother to use it. Also, there is something called a “thyroid guard” for use during mammograms. By coincidence, I had my yearly mammogram yesterday. I felt a little silly, but I asked about the guard and sure enough, the technician had one in a drawer. I asked why it wasn’t routinely used. Answer: “I don’t know. You have to ask for it.” Well, if I hadn’t seen the show, how would I have known to ask?

Someone was nice enough to forward this to me. I hope you pass this on to your friends and family.
