Dr Oz did a segment on Varicose Veins, because more than 20 million people have the pain and embarrassment of having Varicose Veins. How can you prevent Varicose Veins? Doctor Oz spoke about some interesting ways to prevent Varicose Veins including 25 mm HG Compression Stockings, Horse Chestnut Seed, Hesperidin and Diosmin.
Dr Oz: What Are Varicose Veins?
Dr Oz said that Varicose Veins happen because of a break down of the valve inside of your veins. Lets say that blood generally only goes from your feet up to your head through a vein. In that vein there is a one-way valve that opens to let blood through but closes so that it cannot go back the other way. When these valves break, then blood starts going the wrong direction in your veins and the vein starts to get deformed. This is how a Varicose Vein forms and it looks like a worm underneath your skin. Varicose Veins make your tissue grow bigger and bigger and can eventually cause painful ulcers that can get infected and take months to heal.
Dr Oz: Varicose Veins Risk Factors
Dr Oz said that race and caffeine are not factors for Varicose Veins, but the following are Varicose Veins Risk Factors:
- Family History
- Height (the taller you are, the bigger your risk)
Of all of these risk factors, the only thing you can change is your activity level.
Dr Oz: Compression Stockings for Varicose Veins
Dr Oz said that one solution to prevent Varicose Veins is to wear Compression Stocking, which may not be that attractive and may look matronly, but if you are standing all the time and are at risk for getting painful ulcers, it is better to wear these under your pants where nobody will see them anyway. Dr Oz said to look for 25 mm HG Compression Stockings.
Dr Oz: Horse Chestnut Seed for Varicose Veins
Dr Oz said that Horse Chestnut Seed can reduce leg swelling and edema. There is no need to take Horse Chestnut Seed as a preventative measure if you do not yet have the problems, but if you already have the onset of these issues, then Dr Oz said to take 300 mg of Horse Chestnut Seed twice a day.
Dr Oz: Hesperidin & Diosmin for Varicose Veins
Dr Oz said that Hesperidin is a flavonoid found in citrus fruits that helps Varicose Veins. Dr Oz said to look for a Hesperidin pill with Dismoin and take 500 mg daily.
Dr Oz: Elevate Legs for Varicose Veins
Dr Oz said another option is to sit back and to put your legs up to help your Varicose Veins. Make sure that your feet are higher than your heart though!
Dr Oz: Varicose Vein Surgery
The final option is to do a Varicose Vein Surgical Treatment, which are less invasive now than they used to be.
