Dr Oz: 5 Wrong Turns That Lead To Cancer

Doctor Oz did a show called 5 Wrong Turns That Lead To Cancer, because many of us think that we are doing the right thing for our health with respect to our diets, health exams and supplements.  However, even those of us who think we are on the right track might be on a track towards getting Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer and Lung Cancer.  Below are the first 4 Cancer Causers that Dr Oz said to avoid.  The 5th Wrong Turn That Leads to Cancer is eating Low-Fat Foods, which you can read about here: Dr Oz: Low Fat Diet Foods Cause Cancer

Dr Oz: Cancer Prevention

Dr Oz said that is has been 40 years since President Nixon first launched the War On cancer, but despite our government spending over 100 billion dollars on Cancer Research, Cancer is still the second leading killer in America.  Half a million people will die from Cancer this year alone – that is one person every minute.  Cancer Prevention can help steer you in the right direction though and by modifying your self exams, your diet and your lifestyle, you can help prevent Cancer.

Dr Oz: Vitamin E Causes Lung Cancer

Doctor Oz’s first Wrong Turn That Leads To Cancer is “You Overdose On Supplements.”  Dr Oz talks all the time about taking supplements and how important it is for your health, but you can have too much of a good thing.  Dr Gretchen Phillips, Dr Oz Neem Bark ExtractCancer Prevention Expert, said that Vitamin E is a known antioxidant but many studies have looked at how Vitamin E prevents Lung Cancer and recently it was found that high doses of Vitamin E actually can cause Lung Cancer.  At low doses, Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant, but at high doses Vitamin E becomes an Anti-Anti-Oxidant, damages DNA and can lead to Cancer.

Dr Oz: How Much Vitamin E Is Too Much?

Dr Oz said that if you get Vitamin E naturally through food, it is the safest way to go.  For example, by eating 2 handfuls of pistachio nuts everyday you will get all the Vitamin E that you need.  You do not want over 150 IU of Vitamin E, and most multivitamins have in the 30-50 IU range which is fine.  Doctor Oz has previously mentioned taking Vitamin E for hot flashes (click here to read the recap of that segment: Dr Oz Vitamin E & Hot Flashes), which he still says can be good for the short term but probably should be avoided as a long term treatment.  However, even in that segment on taking Vitamin E for Hot Flashes, he speaks about eating foods that are rich in Vitamin E and not about taking high doses of a Vitamin E Supplement.

Dr Oz: Breakfast Prevents Cancer

Doctor Oz’s second Wrong Turn That Leads To Cancer is “You Don’t Eat At The Same Time Every Day.”  Dr Gretchen Phillips said that your body need a routine and fuel that is ready for use.  By having meals at different times everyday, your body goes into stress mode and releases Cortisol, a stress hormone, which leads to insulin spikes and inflammation in your body.  If you don’t have regular meals or your schedule makes it difficult to have meals at the same time everyday, then at least keep a good healthy snack like popcorn or an apple nearby.

Dr Oz: Neem Bark Extract Prevents Gum Disease

Dr Oz’s third Wrong Turn That Leads To Cancer is “You Don’t Brush and Floss Regularly.”  We have heard before about the link between gum disease and Oral Cancer (click here for a recap of a segment where Dr Oz spoke about this topic: Dr Oz: Oral Cancer & Gum Disease), but did you know that poor oral hygiene can lead to cancer all over your body – even Breast Cancer.  It all begins with plaque buildup in your teeth, which if you do not floss or brush regularly, the plaque gets hard and can go into your gums.  Ultimately, this turns on processes that can lead to Cancer down the road.  Dr Phillips said that plaque grows quickly and most people are only brushing their teeth for 38 seconds a day rather than the suggested 2 minutes a day.  I highly recommend getting an electric toothbrush that beeps after two minutes so that you know that you are brushing your teeth for long enough every day.  Dr Oz said that plaque causes inflammation that travels throughout your body.  In fact, Dr Gretchen Phillips said a study found a 75% increase in Breast Cancer in women with Gum Disease compared to those without it.  Doctor Oz had a lady from his audience chew a Dental Plaque Disclosing Tablet which reveals through discoloration how well you brush your teeth.  He also said that if you floss and the plaque that comes out smells really bad, that could be a sign of problems.

Dr Gretchen Phillips also revealed a secret Plaque Fighter called Neem Bark Extract.  She said that people in India chew on branches of a Neem Tree to improve their dental hygiene, and taking Neem Bark Extract is the same concept.  Neem Extract acts as an anti-inflammatory and helps to prevent Gum Disease.  Dr Oz said that it tastes a little bit like mouthwash.

Dr Oz: Sleep Prevents Cancer

Doctor Oz’s fourth Wrong Turn That Leads To Cancer is: “You Don’t Get Enough Sleep.”  Dr Gretchen Phillips said that a study showed that people who get less than 6 hours of sleep every night increase their risk of getting polyps in their colon by 50%.  You want at least 7 hours of sleep per night.  We used to think that Melatonin helps us to go to sleep, but we now know that we produce Melatonin while we sleep and it helps to repair cells.  If damaged cells do not get repaired, then they can lead to Cancer.  Dr Phillips suggest setting an alarm clock every night to tell us when to go to bed.  That way you will be more likely to stick to your bedtime routine every night.

  6. I’m very thankful Dr. Oz has taken such an interest in oral health care, especially gum disease. Gum disease is silent, you usually don’t know it’s happening until there is already destruction of the tooth supporting tissues (gums and bone). What caused the destruction is your body’s inflamatory response to the pathogenic bacteria in your mouth (and everybody has them, to varying degrees). Once you’re diagnosed with gum disease, you’ll have it for the rest of your life! So the best way to fight it is to prevent it altogether. Gum disease has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, to name a few. The oral cavity is the port of entry for many diseases. Please visit your dentist regularly so they can help you prevent this destructive process.

  7. Odd. The work of Linus Pauling and his institute doesn’t mention any such thing. And this article doesn’t mention which variety of vitamin E is causes this.
