Oprah’s No Phone Zone Pledge – Why It’s Important
Oprah Winfrey asked Dr. Oz what happens to our brains when we are texting or talking on the phone and driving? Doctor Oz said that of course, one risk is that our eye is taken off of the road for a few seconds, which is enough to go the length of a few football fields. However, this is not Doctor Oz’s main concern. The biggest problem is that if you text and drive you slow down your reaction by 35%, which is the same as driving after having 4 drinks for a man or 3 drinks for a woman.
Doctor Oz said the science behind texting and driving problems is that the prefrontal cortex is the portion of our brain in charge of focus. If you try to read a newspaper and have cereal, you cannot do both at the same speed, both activities get slowed down a bit. Also, the part of your brain that does spacial orientation goes off completely when you text and drive. Therefore, the collision rates go up 23 times if you send text messages and drive at the same time.
90% of us admit that we know it is dangerous to text and drive at the same time, but most of us still do it. If you have not done it yet, please sign Oprah’s No Phone Zone Pledge here.
