Today Show: A Clutter-Free Closet
What percentage of the clothes in your closet do you think you actually wear? According to a recent article, most people only wear about 20% of their wardrobe. Today Show wanted to help you downsize your closet into a Capsule Wardrobe, with the help of Lilliana Vazquez.
“This is the process of editing all of the clothes in your closet into a very small, specific collection of clothes that fit you currently, that are appropriate for the season, and that are really versatile,” Vasquez said.
Today Show: What Goes in a Capsule Wardrobe?
How many items should you have in your closet? The number may vary depending on your wardrobe or needs, but a good guideline is about 30 items. What does that number mean?
- Included: Tops, Bottoms, Shoes, Dresses, Outerwear
- Not Included: Undergarments, Jewelry, Pajamas, Workout Clothes, Gowns
Today Show: Clothes for Your Lifestyle
It can be intimidating to tackle closet organization, so Vazquez shared a few of her best hints. “Decide what works for your lifestyle,” she said. Set a number (such as 30) and stick to that as you pare down.
Store, donate, or sell whatever doesn’t make the cut. Then make a promise and stick to it: no shopping for the rest of the season, when it’s time to reassess the selections once again. If you can stick to this process, you may be shocked at how easily and quickly you are able to find what you’re looking for and get dressed without all the drama.
Today Show: Mixing, Matching + Layering for Contrast
Today Show invited a few models to show off how this works in practice by mixing and matching pieces from the closet. Swap out your shoes for boots to get a weekend look.
Another way to switch things up is to trade sandals for block heels as you go from summer to fall. Add a sweater or jean jacket to help complete the transition. “The way you create options out of a limited number of places is to actually layer,” Vazquez said. “And layer in unexpected ways.”
Her advice is to make sure the layers contrast one another. That can make your look come together. Do you think you could manage to condense your closet down to a Capsule Wardrobe?
