Dr Oz: Doctor Andrew Weil Cancer-Fighting Diet
Dr Andrew Weil joined Dr Oz to share the secrets to his cancer-fighting diet. Dr Oz referred to Dr Weil as a “pioneer” saying he was one of the first to really prove “you are what you eat.” Dr Weil said the mainstream diet gives us the wrong kinds of fat and carbohydrates, and doesn’t give us enough of the protective elements found in fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. The anti-inflammatory diet he developed is based on the Mediterranean diet, which has been shown to have the best correlation overall with health and longevity.
Dr Oz and Dr Andrew Weil reported that a diet high in cruciferous vegetables can lower your risk for colorectal cancer by 18%. To lower your risk of breast cancer by 30%, eat more natural soy foods like edamame. Lastly, by eating tomato products, you can reduce your risk for gastric cancer by 27%. Following the Western diet can increase your risk of gastric cancer by 200%.

Dr Oz: The Anti-Inflammatory Diet
Dr Weil created a cancer-fighting food pyramid, that Dr Oz recreated right there on set. The base of the pyramid is fruits and vegetables, and then the next level up is beans, pasta, and whole grains. The suggestion is four servings of whole grains per day, 2-3 servings of pastas per week, and 1-2 servings of legumes per day. Fish, particularly salmon comes next, because it’s loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. He suggested eating seafood like salmon and sardines three times per week.
Above fish is soy foods like tofu and edamame, and then above that is lean protein like eggs, chicken, and turkey. Dr Andrew Weil said he personally only eats fish, but moderate amounts of animal proteins are fine. In terms of herbs and spices, he particularly called out garlic powder, ground ginger, and turmeric. Above herbs and sices was tea, and second from the top was red wine. The top of the pyramid was chocolate. Dr Weil explained that both red wine and chocolate are powerful sources of antioxidants.
