Dr Oz: Processed Meats & Cancer
The World Health Organization has announced that processed meats like bacon, sausage, and ham, can cause cancer. So should we all stop eating meat? The WHO declared processed meats carcinogenic to humans and even classified them as group 1 carcinogens, putting them in the same category as smoking and exposure to Asbestos.
The announcement came after the International Agency for Cancer and Research found that all processed meats are linked to multiple types of cancer. They reviewed more than 800 studies and found that colon cancer was more common in people who consumed large amounts of processed meats. The report also labeled red meat as “probably carcinogenic” to humans, linking it to increased risks for colorectal and pancreatic cancer.

Dr Oz: “Dangerous” Processed Meats
So what counts as processed meats? Hot dogs, ham, bacon, corned beef, and salami. The WHO also talked about risks of red meats like steak, veal, and lamb. So how much processed meat does the WHO say puts you at risk? Dr Oz explained that in a day, it’s one a 1/4 hot dogs, 6 slices of ham, just under three slices of bacon, all per day. Just those amounts will increase your cancer risk by about 18%.
Dr Oz explained that an estimated 11% of colorectal cancers are caused by processed or red meats, but 90% of lung cancer is caused by tobacco. Just under 1% of all cancers are thought to be caused by meat, whereas 33% of all cancers are thought to be caused by tobacco. So how could they put them in the same category? Dr Oz said the bottom line is to limit your red and processed meats, and eat more fruits and vegetables.
Will you cut back on the amount of processed or red meats you eat?
Dr Oz: Mirasmooth For Underarm Sweat & Hair
Dr Oz then wanted to switch gears a bit and talk about the new beauty procedure so many women are taking part in: microwaving their armpits to eliminate underarm sweat and hair. Dr Oz explained that it’s called Mirasmooth that’s FDA approved and uses microwave energy. Board certified dermatologist Whitney Bowe performs the procedure and explained that the device heats up the junction between the dermis and the fat, to permanently kill sweat and odor glands, as well as hair follicles. It’s color blind so it treats hair of all colors, which is a breakthrough in hair removal.
Dr Oz: Is Mirasmooth Safe?
Dr Bowe explained that we are born with 2 million sweat glands on our body and only 2% of those are under your arms so you’re perfectly capable of regulating your body temperature without the ones under your arms. The treatment lasts one hour and the follicles and glands are burned, while the top later of the skin is cooled.
A woman who actually underwent the procedure said the initial numbing was the most uncomfortable, and the actualy procedure itself was painless. It costs $2,000, but you might be saving money at the end of the day by not paying for waxing, deodorant, or other beauty treatments anymore.
Would you consider having this procedure done on your own armpits?
Dr Oz: Under-Eye Bag Remedies
Dr Oz then wanted to take a closer look at under-eye bags. One beauty blogger had easy at-home remedies to reducing your under-eye bags. First, take a cold potato and slice it, then lay the slices over your eyes for 15 minutes. Dr Oz explained that because the eye skin is very thin, as you get older you can see through them, causing the dark circles. The cold shrinks the vessels. Potatoes hold the coldness better than cucumbers because they are dense, which is why you’re better using potatoes over your eyes.
Next, if you’re struggling with fluid retention, it can be evident under your eyes. To make the skin tighter, combine 2 whipped egg whites and 2-3 drops of witch hazel. Apply to your under-eyes and leave for 15 minutes. Wash it off and you’re good to go!
