Dr Oz: Family Detox Plan
Dr Oz introduced the Stallman family. They do a lot together, but they are all overweight and would like to adopt some healthier habits. He invited Dr Mark Hyman, author of The Blood Sugar Solution, to help put the Stallmans on the right path.
Dr Hyman said that “getting healthy is a team sport,” which means the family will be a great support system for one another. His first step was to do a detox plan, since most people are sugar addicts. The list of foods to give up includes wheat, sugar, soda, processed and packaged foods, and dairy.
Dr Oz: 10-Day Wheat Detox
Dr Oz said that any family can follow this 10-Day Detox Plan. Get rid of Wheat, in the form of starchy goods like bread, bagels, or cookies. Wheat and other grains can cause inflammation, so eliminating it can make you feel better.
During a detox, you may notice withdrawal in the first few days. But eventually those symptoms will go away, and you can get through these bumps in the road with the support of a buddy or family member.
Dr Oz: Sugar & Soda Detox
The Stallman family also enjoys sweets and soda. Mike estimated that he had six to seven 16-oz sodas each day, which means he’s getting a lot of sugar, maybe without realizing it. That can drive up insulin, cause cravings, and spur belly fat storage.
People can lose weight and feel better in just 10 days. Dr Hyman said one of his patients lost 75 pounds simply by giving up soda.
Dr Oz: Processed & Packaged Foods Detox
Processed foods can contain a lot of added sugars and trans fats, which lead to inflammation and can make you feel worse after eating them. The Stallman family has a lot of processed foods in the pantry at home.
Dr Oz said that it’s important to help children especially change their habits and taste buds so they can be healthy into adulthood.
Dr Oz: 10-Day Dairy Detox
Dr Hyman also recommended leaving Dairy out of your diet during the 10-Day Detox. It can cause digestive problems and weight gain. This is a lot to give up, but there is plenty to add as well.
Dr Oz and Dr Hyman promised to keep up with the Stallmans and their story. He gave them a flip camera so they can share updates on their progress.
