Dr Oz: Boost Brain Energy
Dr Oz was thrilled to welcome back the man behind bulletproof coffee, Dave Asprey. Dave admitted that as a young man, he certainly wasn’t the fitness guru he is now. He was 300 pounds despite exercising and trying to eat less. Dave was determined to find out why he was struggling and why his brain was weak.
Dave interviewed hundreds of experts and “spent hundreds of thousands of dollars hacking my biology” to learn that it was all about the energy in his brain.

Fortunately, Dave came up with a quick test you can take to determine your own brain strength. You can find the quiz on the next page. Keep track of how many “yes” and “no” answers you have.
Dr Oz: What’s Your Brain Strength?
- Do you lose track of important dates?
- Do you crave sweets after a meal?
- Are you late for appointments?
- Do you feel unrefreshed from sleeping?
- Do you snap at people over small things?
If you answered “yes” to three out of five questions, you have a brain weakness. Dave has simple changes you can make to increase your brain strength. It begins with burning fat for fuel. Dave believes if you replace sugar with fat, suddenly your body will be able to convert it to much more energy. The more energy your brain has, the better you feel.
Dave’s most famous hack to achieve that benefit is with bulletproof coffee.
Dr Oz: Homemade Bulletproof Coffee + Collagen
You can make your own bulletproof coffee at home with the following ingredients:
- 8 oz coffee
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp grass-fed butter
Dave claims it works because you’re giving your body nothing but fat in the morning, which causes your brain to wake up and get rid of cravings. However, it’s important to use those ingredients exactly as they are. You can’t swap out regular butter or a different kind of oil.
Incredibly, you can hack the recipe even more by adding collagen protein powder. It has no flavor and won’t cause inflammation. Dave’s also a fan of bacon! But you have to cook it properly.
Dr Oz: Cooking Bacon & Saturated Fat
In order to eat bacon the way Dave approves of, you need to buy organic, pasture-raised bacon. You also need to cook it over medium heat as to not burn the fat that’s in the bacon, which Dave claims is good for you. Dave explained that saturated fat is the “most stable fat for building stable cell membranes” and said it’s been “unfairly maligned.” He doesn’t believe in avoiding saturated fat and likes to pair it with healthy vegetables.
Dave also promotes switching back from brown rice to white basmati rice because it has less arsenic in it. Dave explained that rice isn’t a source of vitamins it’s a source of starch, and unlike brown rice, white rice won’t cause bloating. To get your fiber, you should eat vegetables.
Dave also promotes using raw honey because it charges your liver with extra energy to keep your blood sugar stable all night long. Eat just a couple tablespoons right from the jar right before bed and sleep peacefully all night long. Additionally, Dave likes the idea of using halogen lights instead of LED or fluorescent bulbs to avoid staying up too long at night.
