Dr. Oz: Fast Metabolism Plan
Dr. Oz unveiled his Fast Metabolism Plan on his show, sharing it with an audience member named Courtney. Courtney says she can’t avoid the holiday weight gain every season. She said she uses gain 5 to 8 pounds every time. She has to travel the longest to be with her family and her two siblings do a cook-off every year and she has to taste everything as a judge.
The diet works by letting you choose how you want your week to work. Every week, you get two splurge days, two high protein days, one smart carb day, and two healthy fat days.
So, altogether, Courtney’s week looked like this:
- Sunday: High Protein Day
- Monday: High Protein Day
- Tuesday: Healthy Fat Day
- Wednesday: Smart Carb Day
- Thursday: Splurge Day
- Friday: Splurge Day
- Saturday: Healthy Fat Day
During the week, you’ll be able to switch days if you want to, as long as you get all seven things on all seven days. This diet won’t help you lose weight. It’s designed to help you maintain your weight.
Dr. Oz: Two Splurge Days
Because Dr. Oz knows you’ll want to splurge this holiday season, this diet incorporates two splurge days, which you can put on two days of the seven day week. Courtney chose to have hers on Thursday and Friday. Dr. Oz said we should enjoy these days and not think about what we’re eating, as long as we follow the other five days.
Dr. Oz: High Protein Day
High Protein Days are the inverse of the splurge days. Protein boosts metabolism naturally, because the body doesn’t know how to metabolize it the right way. To compensate, the body speeds up the metabolism to get rid of it and burn more calories. This makes high protein days perfect to counterbalance the splurge days.
High protein days calls for three high-protein meals and two high-protein snacks. And you won’t have much fat or carbs. For example, you could have a plate of mushrooms, spinach, and egg whites as a meal. You could also have cheese with cucumbers as a snack or turkey wrapped around pickles. Dr. Oz suggested putting the high protein days together on the calendar because that way you can eat the leftovers.
Dr. Oz: Smart Carb Day
Smart Carb Days are important because they’re all about fiber. After those big splurge days, you need to get fiber into your diet, because it helps move food faster through you. Courtney said she always feels really bloated after eating a lot of fiber. Dr. Oz said that if you naturally have a high fiber diet, you won’t have that problem. But if you jump from 10 grams of fiber, the average amount in the American diet, to 25 grams of fiber, which Dr. Oz asks in this diet, you’ll feel a little bloated. The answer is to eat some fiber every day to balance it out.
For the Smart Carb Day, you’ll want one serving of healthy grains at every meal and two fruit snacks between meals. This means oatmeal for breakfast (but no syrup!), dried fruits, beans, bread, apples, and whole grain pasta.
Dr. Oz: Healthy Fat Day
The final days are the Healthy Fat Days. These are critical because you’re basically combining the protein and the fiber altogether and adding some fat. For these days, you’ll need three meals with a healthy fat, protein, and smart carb and two healthy fat snacks. For the fats, add avocado, egg yolk, olive oil, natural peanut butter, and salmon.
Courtney said this diet didn’t seem hard at all and said she was willing to try it.
