Dr Oz: Healthier Takeout
We all have those days where we are absolutely desperate for dinner ideas after a long, exhausting day. Eating healthy begins with cooking at home, but sometimes we all deserve a takeout night. That’s why Rocco DiSpirito visited a busy couple at their home to help them learn how to make healthy decisions when they’re too tired to cook at home.
Dr Oz: Good Choices When Eating Italian

Dr Oz welcomed Rocco DiSpirito who shared his healthy swaps so you can still enjoy takeout, and some great ideas for healthy cooking at home. (stevendepolo / Flickr)
First, when ordering Italian, Rocco suggested you skip the antipasto salad because it’s loaded with processed meats and cheese. Instead, go for the Minestrone, because it’s around 250 calories for the entire portion you’re likely served!
As for the main course, instead of chicken parmigiana which is breaded, fried, and loaded with cheese, go for the chicken marsala which typically clocks in at a little over 200 calories, saving you more than 300 calories for your main course!
Dr Oz: Healthier Chinese Takeout
If you’re a Chinese food fanatic, egg rolls can be a tasty treat but they’re fried and nutritionally void. Instead, order the edamame, which are steamed soy beans. They’re high in fiber and protein, and because they’re so healthy you really don’t even have to count the calories in them!
For a main course, instead of General Tso’s chicken, go for the steamed chicken chow mein and vgetables because it’s loaded with healthy ingredients. That swap can save you more than 600 calories!
Rocco explained that you can customize your order just about anywhere you go, which means all you have to do is explain what you want. If you want sushi, ask for brown rice with any sushi. At a diner, ask for roast chicken with sauteed vegetables. A gyro with a ton of vegetables is a great meal option as well!
If you’re desperate for a quick meal and want to whip up a frozen meal, be sure to stock your freezer with healthy meals that include vegetables. Frozen food doesn’t automatically have to mean unhealthy food!
Dr Oz: Fill Up With Negative Calorie Foods
Rocco actually lost 50 pounds by changing his diet, explaining that he didn’t want to spend all of time time counting calories. That’s why he came up with a diet that allows you to eat all the foods you want, as long as they’re the right kind of foods. For him, a negative calorie food has to contain less calories than someone burns metabolizing them, has to boost your metabolism, and it has to have a lot of water and fiber to fill you up.
There are five foods in particular that Rocco recommends because they’re all under 50 calories. First was broccoli which he likes to enjoy with almonds, lime juice, cilantro, and fish sauce. He turns a healthy vegetable into a base for a salad. He also really likes apples because 6 slices is only 39 calories. He makes his own applesauce by adding monk fruit extract and cinnamon to grated apples.
Dr Oz: A Healthier Way To Enjoy Sushi
He makes sushi with cucumbers, which are mostly water, at just 8 calories! He replaces the rice with raw slivered almonds and chia seeds soaked in water, which means it’s a meal that’s practically pure superfoods! Strawberries are just 49 calories and help burn fat. He enjoys them for breakfast with hemp hearts, whole almonds, and quinoa. Finally, Rocco absolutely loves mushrooms, so he uses them to make meatballs and gravy, which means he’s saving calories, fat, and a whole lot of grease!
The main idea behind Rocco’s diet and lifestyle is finding ways to incorporate vegetables and replace unhealthy foods with healthy ones in order to produce tasty food you can enjoy.
