Dr. Oz: JJ Virgin Sugar Free Diet
Dr. Oz talked on his show today about ways to cut down sugar, talking to Sugar Impact Diet author JJ Virgin. Cutting down on sugar can make you slimmer, more energetic, and more focused.
Dr. Oz: Seven Hidden Sources of Sugar
JJ Virgin argues that there are seven hidden sources of sugar, including grains, roots, fruits, low-fat and diet foods, sauces and dressings, sweet drinks, and sweeteners. JJ Virgin said we all know sodas, cakes, and cookies have sugar. But the real problem is the hidden sources of sugar.
Sugar is hiding in fat free yogurt, for example. In fact, it has the same amount of sugar as two and a half glazed donuts. JJ Virgin has divided the sugary foods into high, medium, and low sugar impact foods.
JJ Virgin has a three-week program to take us from a high sugar food diet to a low sugar food diet.
Dr. Oz: High to Medium Sugar Impact Foods
For the first week, you’re going to taper from a high sugar impact diet to a medium sugar impact diet. Most people have dessert for breakfast. A muffin and a latte is what JJ Virgin calls a “cupcake and a milkshake.” This is the wrong way to start, because then your blood sugar will go on a roller coaster ride. Instead, JJ Virgin said people should start with a shake that has chia seeds, protein powder, coconut milk, and berries.
For lunch, instead of a white flour wrap on our sandwich, use a rice tortilla wrap with some wild salmon and lots of veggies. For a snack, instead of the yogurt, have some Greek style yogurt with fresh fruit. For dinner, have sweet potatoes and a grass-fed beef patty with no bun and more veggies.
Dr. Oz: Avoid Sugar Mood Swings
JJ Virgin said that if you got from a sugary diet to no sugar at all, you’ll have a lot of mood swings because your body is used to sugar. You’ll have cravings and you might crash. Instead, JJ Virgin recommends this tapering three week diet.
Dr. Oz talked to Colleen, who has tried this diet. She said this was easier than she thought it was going to be, but the first few days she missed her chocolate. But during that time, she had a lot less brain fog and felt a lot better. She lost seven pounds in six days on this diet.
Dr. Oz: Low Sugar Diet
After tapering during that first week, you want to have two weeks of substituting medium sugar impact foods for low impact foods. You’re going to cut out most of the sugar and get rid of the fruit. Fruit is great, but if you rely on it too much, it’s going to raise your blood sugar. This period is designed to make your body worse at transporting fructose in order to help you burn more fat and have more energy.
JJ Virgin once again recommends a shake to start the day with protein, healthy fats, and lots of fiber. Then there’s a roast beef veggie wrap with some nice beans. She also recommends some chicken kabobs with lentils on the side and some artichoke.
Dr. Oz: Maintaining a Low Sugar Diet
JJ Virgin said that to keep this going after the three weeks, you’re allowed two medium sugar impact foods per day. During this time, check out where you’re at. Are you feeling more sluggish? Are you gaining weight or is it staying the same? This will help you gauge exactly how much sugar you should be eating.
JJ Virgin said this diet will help you lose your sweet tooth. She’s taken several sugar addicts through this diet and at the end, they all thought sugary foods tasted gross. The average person lost 10 pounds and a couple inches off their waist during this diet. Dr. Oz said he thought this was a recipe for success long term.
