Dr Oz: Food Addiction
Dr Oz brought Marjon on his show to help her break free from her Food Addiction. He introduced Marjon to Tennie McCarty, found of the Shades of Hope Treatment Center who has a new show on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) called Addicted to Food. This is not the first time that Dr Oz spoke about Food Addicts though, click here to read another segment he did on Food Addiction.
Dr Oz: Shades of Hope Treatment Center for Food Addiction
Doctor Oz asked Tennie McCarty what type of techniques they use that are often considered to be unorthodox? She said that they tell people that addiction is the only disease that tells a person that they do not have it. With addictions, like a Food Addiction, we do not even know we are lying to ourselves when we do it. So McCarty said that at Shades of Hope they basically rub the disease in the addicts face. Tennie McCarty is no stranger to weight problems or addiction problems. In fact, she said that the first time she saw morbid obesity was when she was just 13 years old and weighed 250 pounds. Her doctor wrote down on her chart that she was morbidly obese. She lost 100-150 pounds several times, but she could never keep it off.
Dr Oz asked McCarty what Marjon will be hearing, if she chooses to go to Shades of Hope. Tennie asked Marjon if she wants to recover, and she said yes. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for Food Addicts. A diet does not work – you need a lifestyle change. At Shades of Hope, McCarty said that each person gets their own prescribed food plan that is weighed and measured. The food plan is scientific and made specifically for each individual. She said that people generally adjust to the food portions in 5 days, but sugar addicts often go through severe withdrawal and get physically sick.
Needless to say, Marjon agreed to go with Tennie McCarty to the Shades of Hope Treatment Center for her Food Addiction. McCarty said that the main thing they treat is the big “C” which is control. Addicts are all control freaks, and they have to learn to give up that control.
