Dr Oz: Microwave Popcorn Health Dangers
Dr. Oz says microwave popcorn is hiding a dangerous new threat to your health and he thinks you need to know what it is before buying another package at the grocery store. He reveals disturbing news about ‘Popcorn Lung’ that everyone who eats microwave popcorn cannot afford to miss!
Dr Oz: PFOA Toxic Microwave Popcorn Chemical
A lot of people love popcorn, especially since it is a pretty healthy snack that is whole grain, high in fiber, contains antioxidants, and is low-calorie, but the microwave version could be posing a serious risk to your health. Pediatrician Dr. Alan Greene says popcorn is a great snack, but he warns there are some chemicals in some bags of microwave popcorn that have been linked to cancer, kidney disease, and even thyroid disease.
Toxic Bag Liners: A chemical called PFOA is used to create a non-stick surface inside microwave popcorn bags, but it is not meant to go into our bodies and when it does, our bodies do not know how to get rid of it. This leads to a toxic build-up in our bodies, especially for those who eat microwave popcorn on a regular basis.
Dr. Greene explains that high levels of PFOA in the body can lead to serious health problems, including high cholesterol and kidney cancer.
Dr Oz: What is Popcorn Lung?
The next danger in microwave popcorn is the chemical flavoring used to make it smell and taste so great. Artificial butter flavoring, or Diacetyl, causes an aroma that can lead to serious lung disease in some people, which was initially discovered when it affected factory workers who were manufacturing microwave popcorn. Popcorn Lung, as it is referred to, can happen to anyone who eats an average of two bags of microwave popcorn per day and inhales the toxic fumes into their lungs. The chemicals literally begin to scar the lungs and the scars get bigger and bigger, causing holes on the lungs, and ultimately serious breathing problems.
Dr. Greene says the best ways to lower your risk for Popcorn Lung are to eat less microwave popcorn and never inhale the fumes that billow out from the bag. He also recommends looking for packaging that is labeled “No added diacetyl butter flavorings”.
Dr Oz: How to Make Your Own Microwave Popcorn
The last danger in microwave popcorn that even surprised Dr. Oz is the presence of trans fats. Dr. Greene says trans fats are often used in microwave popcorn because they keep the oils from spoiling, which is why so many brands contain the unhealthy ingredient.
Dr. Alan Greene does not mind if people eat microwave popcorn on occasion, but if you eat popcorn regularly he says there is a better, healthier way to do it.
- Look for microwave popcorn that is organic and Non-GMO.
- Make your own microwave popcorn by taking ¼ cup kernels and put them into a plain paper bag. Fold the bag and cook in the microwave until fully popped, about 90 seconds.
Dr. Oz says he and his family love and eat popcorn regularly and he does not recommend anyone eat microwave popcorn regularly due to the health risks it poses.
