Dr Oz: Feeding Someone To Death?
Dr Oz has been meeting people stuck in toxic relationships with friends and family who will not support their health needs. Susan explained that she is diabetic and has to wear an insulin pump. She said she knows she must lose weight, but her husband Bill is standing in her way by showing love through food.
Dr Oz: Cooking Off Your Diet & Diabetic Glucose Monitor

Are you showing love through food? It can create a toxic situation that is sabotaging your relationship. A diabetic woman confronted her husband about this.
Bill loves to shop and cook while Susan works. It is his way of showing love, by making sure that she has something tasty to eat for dinner. But the family agrees that she is going to have to change her diet due to her serious health concerns.
Since she is no longer in control of the kitchen or groceries, Susan said she is angry and resentful of her husband. Bill said he thinks his wife is overreacting, and pointed out that “she doesn’t have to eat it.” But she said she’s eating his cooking so she won’t hurt his feelings.
Susan’s daughter is worried that if Bill doesn’t change what he cooks, she could lose her mother. In the studio, Susan explained to Doctor Oz that she has been diabetic for 20 years, but her life has changed since recently getting a glucose monitor.
Dr Oz: Showing Love Through Food
“I love him. I know he loves me, but he’s killing me,” she said of her husband.
For his part, Bill said that he is cooking some of his favorites, which he can see are not the best choices for her. He also did say that it would hurt his feelings if she did not eat his food.
Mandy said he thinks food is a loving family tradition that Bill grew up with, but he cannot understand that this is not exactly the type of love that Susan needs.
Dr Oz: Listening To Your Partner
Dr Brenda Wade said this is another common type of relationship. She said that husbands have to listen to their wives. Susan’s condition is serious, but Dr Wade is concerned that it’s not getting through to Bill.
She suggested that his identity is wrapped up in cooking, which has become very important to him. “Your wife just can’t eat it,” she said. “When are you going to start listening to her?”
Dr Oz: Diabetic Complications
Dr Wade got Bill to commit to listening to what his wife is saying she needs. He told Dr Oz that he may not understand how serious his wife’s illness could be. Dr Oz used an animation to scare Bill and Susan about what might happen in her future if she does not get her health in check.
Within a decade, Susan could go blind. In about 20 years, she could be facing kidney failure or amputation of a foot or leg. Her heart attack or stroke risk is elevated constantly, and she could die at any point.
Bill really seemed to come to terms with the harsh reality, and Dr Oz encouraged the couple to take this opportunity to get control of Susan’s disease and turn the tide.
