Dr. Oz: Top 5 New Health Foods, Broccoli Sprouts & Umeboshi Paste

Dr. Oz: Amaranth

Dr. Oz talked about the top five new health foods out there on his show today. Number 5 was Amaranth, which is good for the heart and helps control cholesterol.

“Move over, quinoa. There’s a new grain in town,” Dr. Oz said.

Dr. Oz also recommended number 4, broccoli sprouts, for fighting cancer. Although many people hate broccoli, broccoli sprouts have 20 times more of the cancer-fighting compound that broccoli has. They’re very good for you and you can even eat them raw. You could put them in soups, on sandwiches, or in salads.

Dr. Oz: Bean Pasta

Number 3 was bean pasta, which Dr. Oz recommended for weight loss. These are gluten free, high in protein and fiber, and low on the glycemic index, which means you feel full faster.

Nina lost 52 pounds by switching to bean pasta. Nina said that she and her husband were trying to lose weight for the wedding and they found bean pasta in the supermarket. They loved it and they’ve been eating it ever since. Nina makes it like regular pasta with her favorite marinara or in a veggie stir fry. Her husband likes to toast it after cooking it al dente to use it as a garnish on food. Dr. Oz congratulated her on the wedding and on losing the weight.

Dr. Oz: Umeboshi Paste

Umeboshi paste was number 2 and it helps with gut health. You may not have heard of umeboshi before, but it’s extremely healthy! It’s made from pickled umeboshi plums, which are natural probiotics. It’s also great for bad breath.

One woman in the audience named Allie volunteered to test out the umeboshi paste for bad breath. She had an onion bagel that morning. Dr. Oz served the paste on cucumber slices. She said it was very tasty.

Dr. Oz: Coconut Chips

The best new health food was coconut chips, which have good fat and help give you more energy. Dr. Oz said he loves eating coconut chips straight out of the bag and served them to his audience. Everyone got a bag.
