Dr. Oz: Dangers of Taking Melatonin Supplements
Dr. Oz talked to Keisha, who has become addicted to melatonin supplements. It all started when she moved from Dallas to Houston for a job change. After the move, she hasn’t been able to get a good night’s sleep. She’ll lay in bed for 30 to 40 minutes. She’s tried acupuncture, warm milk, Chinese medicine, herbs, things from the internet, exercise, and a lot more. That’s how she ended up taking melatonin. She considered it a natural remedy.
She’ll take the melatonin around 9 p.m. If it’s not working, she’ll do housework like dishes and laundry or walk her dog. After 3 a.m. is when she takes the second dose. That’s usually when she’s able to go to sleep for two hours and then she wakes up at 7. She started at one pill and now she’s up to almost 12 pills. She knows this many pills can’t be healthy, but she’s not sure how to stop and get really good sleep.
Dr. Oz: How Much Melatonin Should You Take?
Dr. Oz took Keisha to the Truth Tube to find her health numbers and assess her situation. Keisha said she took melatonin because it seemed healthy and it worked in the beginning. Dr. Oz said when used correctly, it does work. Normally, it’s recommended that you take around one milligram. Keisha was a little past that, at 35 milligrams.
Dr. Oz didn’t expect her to be taking that much. Even at far less than that, you start to see hormone changes, especially with the thyroid and progesterone. Keisha’s hormones were fine, however. Nausea is another side effect, which she wasn’t experiencing. Another side effect was headaches, which Keisha said she did get. She also get migraines. The last symptom is grogginess, which Keisha said she experienced all the time.
Dr. Oz: Sleeping Patterns with Melatonin
The average amount of sleep Keisha gets is around 3 hours and 33 minutes, which she said is a good day. Keisha said she’s barely getting through this and she really needed help. She wasn’t sure how she functioned.
Dr. Oz showed a video of Keisha sleeping. The first dosage at 9 p.m. is six pills. But she didn’t get to sleep until an hour and a half later. Then, she’s back up at 11:30. Then she took six more pills. Dr. Oz wondered why she took six more if the first six didn’t work. She said she just wanted the other hour and a half the pills gave her.
Dr. Oz said he had a great, healthy solution for her addiction to melatonin supplements. Keisha said she was ready for it.
