Dr. Oz: Butter in Coffee?
A rising trend in dieting is putting butter in coffee and Dr. Oz weighed in on it. People say it helps with energy, alertness, and weight loss. Dr. Oz has even mentioned in on the show before. But what are the facts? Could it really be healthy?

Dr. Oz welcomed Cecilia and Miriam, mom and daughter, to come on the show. They have differing opinions on how good it is for you. Daughter Miriam swears by it, but mom Cecilia thinks her daughter is nuts. Miriam said she started the Paleo Diet two years ago and had to cut out dairy. She looked on the internet and found out that she could substitute milk with ghee, which is clarified butter. She started adding butter, coconut oil, and cinnamon to her coffee.
Cecilia thinks it’s disgusting and thought her cholesterol must be threw the roof. She said because Miriam is young, she thinks she’s going to get away with it, but it’ll catch up with her.
Dr. Oz tested their knowledge by asking several questions about the “butter in coffee” fad. Is butter in coffee good as a breakfast replacement: fad or fact? Miriam thought this was a fact, but Cecilia was right in thinking it was a fad. Nutritionally, it’s a bad replacement. It’s important to have protein and fiber for breakfast, like eggs and apples.
Dr. Oz: Is Possible Buttered Coffee Can Prolong Energy?
Is it possible buttered coffee can prolong your energy? This time Cecilia thought it was a fad, as well as the audience, but they were wrong. Miriam was right in saying it’s a fact. Dr. Oz said this surprised him, too. Butter slows down the absorption of caffeine into the bloodstream, so the same amount of caffeine lasts a lot longer. But it’s important to do it in moderation, because of the butter.
Dr. Oz: Is Buttered Coffee Good For Your Heart?
Is buttered coffee good for your heart? Cecilia said no, but Miriam said yes. Cecilia was right. Saturated fats will never be good for your heart. Putting butter in your coffee is not a good direction for your heart.
Dr. Oz: Can Buttered Coffee Help You Lose Weight?
Can buttered coffee help you lose weight? This time, Miriam and Cecilia traded places. Miriam said fad, because she thought losing weight took more effort than diet alone. But Cecilia said that if buttered coffee keeps you full for longer, you’re not going to eat as much. It turns out Cecilia was right. For the average person, this will help weight loss.
Cecilia still said she would never try butter in her coffee.
