Dr. Oz: Pain Keeping You Awake at Night
Dr. Oz has been talking to Dr. Michael Breus about sleep issues and how we can get past them on his show. Dr. Oz said that every night, we might lose one hour of sleep without even knowing it. This can be from pain in our neck, back, headaches, or stiff joints. This plan helps treat the pain and improve your sleep. Dr. Breus said that if pain lingers, it slowly cracks away at your sleep.
Dr. Oz: Treat Anxiety
Dr. Michael Breus said the first thing to do is to lower our anxiety. Dr. Breus walked Dr. Oz backstage and outside to show people how to do that. It turns out that if you get 15 minutes of bright light in the morning when you wake up and in the afternoon, you’ll reset your circadian rhythm and reset your mood. This will help dramatically with anxiety, depression, and sleep.
Dr. Oz: Take Both a Sleep Aid and an Over-The-Counter Med
Dr. Breus recommended talking an ibuprofen and a sleep aid about 30 minutes before bed to treat the pain and help you sleep. This will help gently nudge you into sleep.
Dr. Oz asked Christine in the audience to try this out. She suffers from back pain and this helped her in just a few days sleep much better.
Dr. Oz: Position Your Pillow to Alleviate Pain
Christine demonstrated how she lays in bed at night, which is to lay on her back. If you have a firm mattress, this will push up on the pelvis, causing lower back pain. He suggested putting a pillow under the knees to pull the strain off the back. He also recommended having the pillow come to just the edge of the shoulders so the neck isn’t too elevated.
If you sleep on your side, put a thin pillow between your legs and a thick pillow under your head, because that will support your spine and your head best.
