Dr. Oz: Oprah Winfrey Selma, Maya Angelou’s Passing & Health Epiphany

Dr. Oz: Oprah Winfrey Flu

Dr. Oz had the incredible Oprah Winfrey on his show to talk about her new movie Selma. Oprah is getting over the flu, so Dr. Oz jokingly gave her a face mask to cover her germs. But Oprah said she was feeling so good, Dr. Oz could kiss her. So he did.

Dr. Oz: Oprah Winfrey Thyroid Problem

Dr. Oz asked Oprah what kind of patient she is. She said she’s a very obedient patient, but Dr. Oz said she was a stubborn patient. Oprah said she was very sensitive to what’s happening in her body. When she had a thyroid issue, they gave her a medication and she felt like it was too much for her body. She needed either half the meds or have one every other day.

It turned out Oprah was diagnosed with her thyroid problem after a viewer saw a picture of her and sent her a note saying she should get her thyroid checked out. She went to the doctor and it turned out she really did have a thyroid problem.

Oprah Winfrey was also promoting her movie Selma, about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the protests for civil rights in Selma in 1965. Oprah plays Annie Lee Cooper, a Selma native who became a civil rights activist after being denied the right to vote.

Dr. King led civil rights activists on a march from Selma to the capital of Alabama three times to gain national attention for civil rights. Their peaceful protests were often met by violence. After these marches, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed, prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. It’s one of the landmark accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement.

Dr. Oz: Oprah Winfrey Racism & Healing

Dr. Oz said we’re still fighting racism in this country and asked Oprah how we heal our nation. Oprah said we should fight racism by hearing other people’s stories. She said the more stories that people know from people of other races, the more they’ll see how human we all are.

Oprah said she’s often told she needs to do more black shows and stories about black people. But she said what we really need is a conversation about humanness. She said she thought it was more impactful to do a story about a black father reading to his children and putting them to bed than to do a story about black fathers. This is because people of other races can see a black father cares for his child in the same way they do for their own.

“You cannot heal, unless you’re first willing to hear. So we need to hear each other’s stories,” Oprah said.

Dr. Oz: Oprah Winfrey Hearing Stories

Selma is about understanding the story of our country, Oprah said. It’s about a group of people fighting for the right to vote.

Dr. Oz said that there are a lot of people who haven’t faced prejudice in their own lives. He wondered how we get them to appreciate the racism that’s out there. Oprah said the real issue is that the stories have never actually been heard or observed or acknowledged.

Oprah said she did a show where the descendants of Jefferson met with the descendants of the slaves that Jefferson owned. She said it made a huge difference for the Jefferson descendants to say to the slave descendants they were done wrong and that it never should have happened.

She said she hoped Selma would open up a conversation. She said the people back then had incredible courage and were very young. She wasn’t sure if she would have had the courage at 21 to be a Freedom Rider or to walk in the Selma marches.

Oprah said this is a very important story for people to know.

Dr. Oz: Oprah Winfrey on Maya Angelou’s Passing

As Oprah was filming the movie, Maya Angelou, beloved poet and surrogate mom to Oprah, passed away. Oprah said after she found out, she was told she didn’t have to shoot that day. But she decided to film anyway and used the grief as part of her role.

Selma is rated PG-13 and Dr. Oz said people should take a young person with them.

Dr. Oz: Oprah Winfrey Spirituality and Health

Oprah said she believes you can’t have a hidden spirituality, because you don’t have a spiritual life, you are a spiritual life. This realization helps her stay healthy. She also makes sure to life an intentional life, making sure everything she does has a clear intention behind it. This helps her reduce stress.

Dr. Oz: Oprah Winfrey Health Epiphany

Oprah also told the story of having a healthy epiphany. After avoiding a party because she gained five pounds, she realized later it was a good party and that she missed out because she was hiding. So she made a commitment to always be present and not let weight be an obstacle for her in enjoying life.

Selma is out Christmas Day, December 25, 2014.
