Dr Oz: Everyday Health Heroes
Dr Oz wanted to surprise some audience members as his first Everyday Health Heroes. Vinnie and Bob knew they were there to participate in the show, but were unaware that they were being honored.
He said that their community has nominated the duo, and he shared a video explaining why. Vinnie and Bob run Heart of Surfing began with these two dads, who both have Autistic children. They now help children from families with special needs learn to surf.
Dr Oz: Water Therapy for Autistic Children
They noticed that being in the water was therapeutic for their sons, and they wanted to share that gift of connection with other children and families coping with Autism. One mom talked about the breakthroughs her previously nonverbal son has made thanks to this surfing program.
Another mom spoke about the strides her son has made. Some of the participants talked about their progress in Surfing and how much fun they have while on the water. It is also giving hope to parents that their children can excel in other areas.
Dr Oz: Heart of Surfing
“It’s magical,” Vinnie said of the chance to bring Autistic children and their parents to the beach in the summer, rather than being cooped up at home when school is out.
Bob talked about the benefits for the children, who get “a sense of belonging.” Surfing is about having fun, and there is no way to do it wrong.
Dr Oz had another surprise for the overwhelmed dads. Many children and families from the program were waiting backstage to surprise them and say thank you. It was quite a crowd, and they all seemed to love Bob and Vinnie.
Dr Oz: Ron Jon Surf Shops Donation
To help grow the Heart of Surfing program, Dr Oz partnered with Ron Jon Surf Shops, who wanted to donate brand new boards for kids to use in the program. Bob was very thankful, and Vinnie was overcome with emotion throughout the segment.
In addition, Ron Jon had a check for $5,000 for these Everyday Health Heroes. What a great story! If you know someone who should be honored for making a healthy difference, visit Dr Oz’s website to nominate a local hero.
