Dr Oz brought Tom Colicchio, judge of Top Chef and founder of Craft Restaurants (like Craftbar, Craftsteak and Wichcrafts), onto the Doctor Oz Show to judge a Healthy Top Chef Competition. Dr Oz also found three lovely ladies to prepare healthy meals in just 2 minutes. They could use any ingredients they wanted, but they had to use the microwave to prepare the dish.
Dr Oz: Tom Colicchio & Okra
Dr Oz asked Tom Colicchio if he ever worries about hurting people’s feelings on Top Chef, and he said no because the people come on the show to get hurt feelings – but he does give some positive reinforcement too. Colicchio told Dr Oz that the one food he hates is okra, but Dr Oz loves okra since he is Turkish so he made him a special Okra Recipe. Colicchio said he usually hates okra because it is slimy, which is exactly why Dr Oz said he loves it, but Tom Colicchio said he liked Dr Oz’s Okra Recipe because it was spicy and tasted like a ratatouille.
Dr Oz: Microwave Omelet Recipe
Dr Oz’s first contestant said that since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, she made a Microwave Greek Omelet out of feta cheese, spinach, tomatoes, oregano, salt and pepper. Dr Oz was impressed that it looked like a real egg. She said that you could also make other variations such as a Mexican Omelet or and Italian Omelet. Tom Colicchio gave her second place because he thought she could have microwaved the egg for 20 seconds less and that she could have used a bit more salt and pepper, but overall it was delicious and health. Dr Oz: Microwave Pizza Recipe
Dr Oz’s next contestant made a Healthy Pizza Recipe, because she loves comfort food without the calories. She made a salad of baby arugula, goat cheese and dried cranberries tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette. Then she placed scoops of the salad on top of warm flatbread. Dr Oz and Tom Colicchio both loved this dish, and she won first place! The prize was dinner for two at Colicchio And Sons, one of Tom Colicchio’s restaurants in New York City. Dr Oz: Sweet Potato, Spinach & Mushroom Recipe
The final lady made a vegetarian dish out of sweet potatoes seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg, and spinach seasoned with cayenne pepper. Tom Colicchio said that her dish had the potential to be amazing (and he lover her name Beverley because that is Colicchio’s mom’s name), but that the sweet potatoes were not cooked enough and that the spinach needed a little bit more flavor. He said another minute in the microwave and the dish would have been great. Click here to read the full recipe: Sweet Potatoes, Spinach & Mushrooms Recipe.
