Dr Oz: What Is Gout?
Dr. Oz and Dr. Keri Peterson shared the health detectives in your life who might be able to see the clues that something is wrong before you doctor! Find out the surprising ways that your veterinarian might see the clues that you have ringworm or the sleep disorder that your dental hygienist might detect the next time you lie back in their exam chair!
Dr Oz: Hyperthyroidism Symptoms
Dr. Oz was most fascinated by the next health detective on Dr. Keri Peterson’s list because it is your dry cleaner. Dr Peterson said that your dry cleaner can actually detect if you have hyperthyroidism, which is caused by an overactive thyroid hormone. She said it is most common in women, and one of the most obvious symptoms is excessive sweating, which your dry cleaner might notice on your clothes. Here are some other symptoms to look for:
- Heat intolerance
- Rapid heart rate
- Weight loss
Dr Oz: Signs Of a Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Did you know that your favorite coffee barista might be able to detect a vitamin B12 deficiency? Dr. Keri Peterson said that we often chock up being tired to stress and other things in our lives and the first thing we do is go for that quick cup of coffee. If you have suddenly jumped from needing just one cup a day to needing three cups a day, it could be a sign that you need a vitamin B12 supplement.
Dr Oz: Shoe Salesman Can Detect Rheumatoid Arthritis
Dr. Oz said your shoe salesperson might be able to see the clues to a health problem before you do! Orthopedic surgeon Taryn Rose said that your shoe salesman gets up close and personal with your feet so they can often pick up on clues to a health condition.
One of the most common conditions that might be detected by a shoe salesman is rheumatoid arthritis. It is more common in women and will often show up as a simple ball in your foot, according to Dr. Rose, but she said if it is combined with pain in your hands or knuckles then you should definitely see your doctor. For short term pain relief, Dr. Rose said you can use NSAIDs or flat shoes with cushioning, but she often recommends shoes with toe separators which work as braces for your feet.
Dr Oz: Reduce Inflammation From Gout With Cherries Or Ginger
Dr. Taryn Rose said another health problem that might be detected by your shoe salesman is gout. She explained gout is a painful and swollen big toe due to a high level of uric acid in your body and is really uncomfortable. There are some ways to get immediate relief from the pain, though, by trying some of the following tricks.
- Foot bath: ¼ cup ginger and hot water
- Drink one 6 ounce glass of cherry juice or eat ¼ cup dried cherries
Dr Oz: Dehydration Symptoms
The last health issue that your shoe salesman might detect is dehydration. Dr. Taryn Rose said when a person is dehydrated they will be off balance which will affect their gait, which could be subtle but still noticeable by a trained professional.
Dr Oz: Are You Smarter Than a Pre-Schooler?
Dr. Oz had some brain teasers to stimulate your mind while having a little fun at the same time. He shared an image of a bus and asked his audience to guess which direction the bus was traveling, but it was trickier than you might think because while 90% of preschoolers guessed correctly, most adults did not. He offered another tricky challenge by putting up several words on a screen. Each word was colored, but also the name of a different color. The challenge was to say what color each word was written in rather than the word itself, which was also a color. Lastly, there was an image of the number four and some lettuce. Do you have a guess what word the two images create? Here is a hint: it is a body part. The answer is forehead. Did you get it right?
