Dr. Oz: Anemia
Dr. Oz talked today about a hidden cause of exhaustion that affects over 3 million Americans: Anemia. If you know the signs, you can treat this condition and get your energy back.
Dr. Oz called up an Assistant of the Day named Theresa (which she was quick to tell Dr. Oz is pronounced Thur-reesa, or her mom would get mad). Theresa said normally, she has an energy level of about 8. She did say she feels low-energy when she has a high calorie meal at In-N-Out Burger.
Dr. Oz: What is Anemia?
But Dr. Oz said that there are certain things that exhaust us that aren’t normal. For instance, if you get out of breath when you go up a flight of stairs, if your nails are brittle, and if you feel cold a lot when everyone else feels comfortable, these are symptoms of anemia.
When you’re anemic, you have fewer blood cells. This means when your blood travels through your body, from heart to lungs to liver to the brain, you start to not have enough oxygen carried throughout the body.
Dr. Oz demonstrated this by having Theresa walk in paint and then travel between the organs, which were designated on the floor. The paint ran out by the time she reached the brain, showing the hazards of anemia. It’s important to have oxygen reach your brain adequately, or otherwise you’ll have issues like the exhaustion and other symptoms Dr. Oz mentioned.
Dr. Oz: Eat Iron & Vitamin C to Combat Anemia
Dr. Oz said it’s critical to eat Iron and Vitamin C together to combat anemia. He suggested eating an omelette with red peppers for breakfast, a turkey and chickpea salad for lunch with fresh squeezed orange juice on top, and a steak salad with kale and strawberries for dinner. Theresa said her favorite was the chickpea salad.
