Dr Oz: Jumpstart Your Thyroid
Could your thyroid need a jumpstart to help you burn more fat, feel more energized, and improve your overall well-being? Dr Oz welcomed Dr Natasha Turner to explain new research about new building blocks that can help jumpstart your thyroid. Because your thyroid is one of the major glands in your body that controls your metabolism, it’s important to make sure it’s functioning optimally. As Dr Turner stated, it’s about making the right lifestyle habits and incorporating hormone balancing and enough sleep in your regular routine.
To find out if your thyroid could be in need of a boost, take a look at the symptom checklist on the next page.
Dr Oz: Sluggish Thyroid Symptom Checklist
Take note if you’ve experienced any of the following symptoms in the last three months.
- Have you gained weight?
- Have you experienced brain fog?
- Have you been unusually tired?
- Are you often constipated?
- Are you always cold?
- Have you been especially moody?
Dr Oz: Protein For Breakfast To Boost Your Thyroid
If you checked off at least three of those symptoms, Dr Turner urges you to consider a closer look at the function of your thyroid. There’s one thing in particular your thyroid needs first things in the morning, and that’s protein. Dr Turner advises her patients to eat 30 grams of protein for breakfast. The protein causes a hormonal response that help give your metabolism a boost while burning more fat. It’s also important for appetite control throughout the day.
Dr Oz: Salted Caramel Protein Smoothie
One of the best ways to get your protein first thing in the morning is with a protein drink. Dr Turner suggested putting together a smoothie with whey, pea, or hemp protein power, or Greek yogurt, as a way to reach 30 grams of protein. Combine the following ingredients in a blender to make Dr Turner’s favorite salted caramel protein smoothie.
- 1 tbsp organic almond butter
- 1 C unsweetened chocolate almond milk
- 2 scoops chocolate protein powder
- 1 tbsp cacao nibs
- a tsp sea salt
- 1 tbsp fiber supplement
You also want to be sure to feed your thyroid with the “trio” which are nutrients you need to supply your thyroid with what it needs to produce thyroid hormone. First is tyrosine, which can be found in bananas, eggs, and avocados. Just two eggs a day will give you the dose you need. Iodine combines with the tyrosine to make thyroid hormone. You can get the iodine you need from shellfish, seaweed, or salmon. Finally is selenium, which is necessary to convert the thyroid hormone into the active hormone that will boost your metabolism the most. Wheat germ, mushrooms or just a few Brazil nuts a day will do the trick.
Dr Oz: Thyroid Total Power Booster Drink
To help with stress, ashwagandha is an herb that helps to increase the production of thyroid hormone and helps the conversion of the thyroid hormone to the active hormone. It lowers cortisol, and all you need is 750 to 1,000 mg twice a day.
Another great drink to sip on for a thyroid boost is what Dr Oz called the Thyroid Total Power Booster. It takes just four ingredients and a minute to make. Combine the following ingredients in a blender to reap the benefits. You can add as much water as you want to thin it out or make it last all day long.
