Dr Oz: Are Stretch Pants Wrecking Your Health?
Could your obsession with stretchy, comfortable clothing, even active wear, actually be keeping you from staying on track toward your health and weight loss goals? That’s exactly what Dr Oz wanted to find out, which is why he took a closer look at stretch pants. Women love the form-fitting comfort that stretch pants provide, and admit to being able to eat more because of the stretch. Do you think the elastic waist is great for helping you suck things in? Or do you think they can actually make you eat differently?
Dr Oz spoke to blogger Andie Mitchell, who lost 135 pounds through healthy eating. Andie admitted that she was unsure if her forgiving, comfortable stretch pants were always the best thing for her. Because stretch pants are so flexible, she could wear them throughout her weight gain, without having to actually think about her weight. “They act kind-of like blinders I think,” Andie said.
She also admitted that putting stretch pants on means a day spent lounging around and being less productive. She called it a “stretch pant state of mind.”
Dr Oz: How Yoga Pants Affect Your Diet
Andie actually conducted a “smarty pants” experiment with one viewer. She wanted to find out how the pants you wear translate to exactly what you eat. She looked at how differently one person would eat while wearing stretch pants for five days versus five days in skinny jeans.
Victoria participated in the experiment and logged every single thing she ate. It was discovered that Victoria actually ate 1,000 more calories when she was wearing the stretch pants, as opposed to the skinny jeans. While wearing skinny jeans, she was eating yogurt, green juices, and salads, and Victoria admitted that they motivated her to make healthier choices. Bagels, pasta, and cookies were just some of the foods she ate while wearing stretch pants.
As a solution, Andie first suggested everyone get rid of their “just in case clothes” which are the clothes that are either too small or too large. Secondly, go ahead and wear the stretch pants, but don’t wear them two days in a row. Wear clothes that make you feel good while also holding you accountable. You don’t have to go with super-tight clothes, but less forgiving clothing could serve as a reminder to make healthier choices.
